This surge is attributed to anticipated gas exports scheduled to commence in the latter half of 2024, primarily from the Grand Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) development. Felix Fischer, the IMF’s head of mission to Mauritania, underscores the transformative impact, with gas exports representing 11.6% of total exports and GDP growth fueled by mining and gas revenue.
The GTA project, valued at $4.8 billion, straddles Mauritania and Senegal's maritime border, with BP Plc and Kosmos Energy Ltd. spearheading its development. Expected to produce 2.5 million tons of liquefied natural gas annually in the initial phase, the GTA site is strategically positioned for potential exports to Europe, seeking alternative supplies amid geopolitical considerations.
While the gas exports could position Mauritania as one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa in 2025, challenges such as delays in production commencement and commodity price fluctuations may impact fiscal revenues and debt profiles, according to recent IMF assessments. The GTA project, previously delayed due to pandemic-related issues and contractual disputes, remains crucial for the nation's development spending and international reserves.
Mauritania's gas industry might receive an additional boost from the BirAllah offshore gas discovery, estimated to hold 80 trillion cubic feet of gas. BP and Kosmos face an April deadline for proceeding with the BirAllah development, potentially further enhancing Mauritania's position in the global gas market.
As Mauritania navigates the potential economic windfall from gas exports, the question arises: Will this emerging gas exporter become a significant alternative for the European Union seeking to diversify its energy sources in a post-Russia invasion landscape?
