Renewed Geopolitical Tensions Weigh on Gold in the Short Term, While Long-Term Investment Appeal Remains Intact

          Eva Chen
          Summary:

Renewed tensions in the Middle East have pushed energy prices higher, prompting markets to reprice inflation risks. Expectations that the Federal Reserve will maintain higher interest rates for longer have strengthened the U.S. dollar, leaving gold under short-term pressure. Nevertheless, continued central bank purchases, ETF inflows, and persistent safe-haven demand suggest that gold's long-term bullish outlook remains intact.

          Fundamentals

The Middle East has once again become the focal point of global financial markets. Reports that three oil tankers were attacked near the Strait of Hormuz were followed by a fresh round of U.S. airstrikes against Iran, raising concerns that the already fragile ceasefire could collapse. Markets quickly repriced geopolitical risks, triggering sharp volatility across the energy sector.
At the same time, the United States revoked a key waiver that had allowed Iranian oil to access international markets, intensifying concerns over tightening global crude supply. Oil prices surged as investors reassessed the risk of renewed inflationary pressure driven by higher energy costs.
While escalating geopolitical tensions would normally boost gold through increased safe-haven demand, the market's focus has shifted toward the inflationary implications of rising oil prices. Persistently elevated energy costs could delay Federal Reserve rate cuts by keeping inflation above target, supporting both the U.S. dollar and Treasury yields, thereby reducing the appeal of non-yielding assets such as gold.
Despite these near-term headwinds, gold's long-term investment case remains firmly in place. Continued reserve accumulation by global central banks, improving ETF inflows, and ongoing demand for portfolio diversification are expected to provide structural support for prices. As a result, the current weakness is more likely a corrective phase following the previous rally rather than the end of the longer-term uptrend.
Renewed Geopolitical Tensions Weigh on Gold in the Short Term, While Long-Term Investment Appeal Remains Intact_1

          Technical Analysis

Gold remains confined within a well-defined descending channel, indicating that the broader technical structure continues to favor the bears. Prices remain below the 200-day moving average, suggesting that the medium- to long-term trend is still in a corrective phase.
However, shorter-term technical indicators are beginning to improve. The MACD has formed a bullish crossover near the zero line, indicating that bearish momentum is gradually fading and a technical rebound may be developing. Nevertheless, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) remains around 41, below the neutral 50 threshold, implying that buying pressure is still insufficient to confirm a sustainable trend reversal.
In addition, any near-term rebound is likely to encounter significant resistance from the upper boundary of the descending channel as well as multiple downward trendlines. Failure to break through these resistance levels could result in another decline toward previous lows. Only a decisive breakout above the descending trendline, followed by a move above the 200-day moving average near $4,492, would confirm the end of the medium-term correction and reopen the path for a broader recovery.
Overall, unless key resistance levels are convincingly breached, the current advance should be viewed as a corrective rebound rather than the beginning of a new bullish trend. Gold's long-term strategic value remains intact, but short-term traders should remain alert to the risk of renewed selling pressure if the recovery loses momentum.
