Arthur Hayes predicts Fed yen support, expanding dollar liquidity, could ignite a Bitcoin rally.
BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes has ignited a conversation in financial circles with a bold prediction: a potential move by the U.S. Federal Reserve to stabilize the weakening Japanese yen could inadvertently trigger a major bull run for Bitcoin (BTC).
Hayes argues that if U.S. support for the yen involves expanding dollar liquidity—effectively printing money—the fresh capital could flood into alternative assets like Bitcoin, driving prices significantly higher. His analysis comes as sharp volatility in the dollar-yen exchange rate fuels intense speculation that Japanese authorities are preparing to intervene in currency markets.
According to Hayes, the mechanism linking a yen intervention to a Bitcoin rally is straightforward. In a post on the social media platform X, he outlined a potential scenario:
1. The Fed Creates Liquidity: To support the yen, the Federal Reserve would first create new bank reserves.
2. A Currency Swap: These newly created reserves would then be used to sell U.S. dollars and purchase Japanese yen.
3. Global Liquidity Expands: This action would increase the total amount of dollar liquidity in the global financial system.
Hayes suggests these operations could be recorded on the Fed's balance sheet under foreign-currency-denominated assets. For crypto investors, the key takeaway is that an expansion of the dollar supply could devalue the currency and push investors toward scarce assets like Bitcoin.
Recent market activity has given weight to theories of imminent central bank action. Traders have pointed to large single-day gains in the yen as a possible sign that an official intervention is underway.
Adding to the speculation, reports emerged that the New York Fed has been contacting major banks to gauge market conditions for the yen. This type of inquiry, often called a "rate check," is widely seen as a precursor to direct intervention. Since the New York Fed executes transactions on behalf of the U.S. Treasury Department, these actions are monitored closely as a signal of official concern over currency stability.
The focus on intervention intensified after the yen recorded its largest single-day gain against the dollar since August on Friday, January 23. The move followed signals from U.S. and Japanese officials that they were prepared to act to halt the yen's decline. On that day, the dollar fell 1.7% against the yen and also weakened against other Asian currencies, including the Taiwanese dollar and the South Korean won.
This currency market turmoil unfolded alongside a volatile week in the bond market. A selloff in U.S. Treasury bonds caused yields to soar, with traders initially attributing the move to concerns over President Donald Trump's policies regarding Greenland.
However, Scott Bessent, the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury, offered a different explanation. He claimed the pressure on U.S. bonds stemmed from surging yields on Japanese government bonds (JGBs). In Japan, long-term JGBs had sold off sharply due to investor anxiety over increased government borrowing.
This fiscal concern was linked directly to domestic politics. Japan’s Prime Minister, Sanae Takaichi, who assumed office in October, called a surprise election for February 8 to solidify her coalition's power. According to analysts, the selloff in Japanese bonds was primarily driven by Takaichi’s campaign pledge to suspend taxes on grocery sales for two years—a move that would likely require significant new government debt.
