Xi and Lee pursue a 'new era' for China-South Korea relations, navigating regional security amid intensifying global pressures.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and South Korean leader Lee Jae Myung met in Beijing on Monday, their second summit in two months, signaling a concerted push to steady relations as geopolitical pressures intensify.
Lee's four-day visit, which also includes a stop in Shanghai, is the first by a sitting South Korean president to China since 2019. It follows a trip by Xi to South Korea in late October, his first in 11 years.
During the meeting, President Xi highlighted that the frequency of their talks underscored the importance of the China-South Korea relationship. He noted that as neighbors, Beijing and Seoul share common interests and should enhance communication.
President Lee expressed a desire to "open a new era of South Korea-China relations" with Xi. He stated that the summit was a key opportunity to make 2026 the "inaugural year of the full restoration" of their partnership.
The high-level talks occurred against a tense international backdrop. As Lee arrived in China on Sunday, North Korea conducted a hypersonic missile test, a stark reminder of the security challenges facing Seoul. Days earlier, the United States captured Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and transported him to New York for trial.
Lee directly appealed to Beijing for assistance in promoting peace on the Korean Peninsula. "Peace is the fundamental foundation for prosperity and growth, and it is essential that our two countries work together to contribute to it," he said.
China remains North Korea's most critical ally, providing essential economic support while Pyongyang faces sanctions from the U.S. and its partners. In September, Xi hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at a military parade in Beijing, where Xi and Kim committed to strengthening their ties.
Beyond strategic discussions, the two nations solidified their economic partnership by signing 14 memorandums of understanding. These agreements cover areas such as fine dust mitigation and food exports.
Additionally, they agreed to establish a new ministerial-level commerce dialogue channel. According to South Korea's industry ministry, the first meeting under this framework is scheduled for the first half of the year.
