ExxonMobil eyes Venezuela's oil return, touting heavy crude tech and awaiting political stability.
ExxonMobil is ready to re-enter Venezuela's oil sector, stating it has the technology to significantly lower the production costs of the nation's notoriously difficult-to-process heavy crude oil—once conditions for investment are met.
CEO Darren Woods confirmed the company's position, noting that a return to the South American country is not currently feasible but remains a future possibility. He highlighted that Exxon's extensive experience with heavy crude in Canada provides a clear blueprint for success in Venezuela.
Speaking to analysts after releasing fourth-quarter results, Woods outlined the company's competitive advantage. He explained that Exxon's specialized approach enables lower-cost production and higher recovery rates, ultimately bringing more "economic barrels" to the market.
"That's the opportunity set for us that will play out, maybe, over time," Woods stated, framing a potential return as a long-term strategic play.
Before any investment, ExxonMobil requires absolute clarity on the country's fiscal and legal frameworks. Woods expressed support for the Trump administration's approach to Venezuela, believing its strategy will eventually create a stable environment for business.
According to Woods, the administration's objectives are correctly focused on three core areas:
• Stabilizing the country
• Restarting the economy
• Transitioning to a democratically-elected government
"These are the right objectives," he affirmed.
Reaffirming a previous commitment, Woods said ExxonMobil is still prepared to send a technical team to Venezuela. The team's mission would be to assess the current state of the nation's energy sector and provide its expert perspective to the administration. "We're still committed to doing that," he concluded.
