Treasury Secretary Bessent reinforced a strong dollar policy based on fundamentals, rallying the currency amid mixed signals.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent on Wednesday reinforced Washington's commitment to a "strong dollar policy," clarifying that the administration's strategy relies on solid economic fundamentals rather than direct currency market intervention.
In a direct response to questions on CNBC, Bessent unequivocally denied any U.S. intervention aimed at strengthening the Japanese yen. When pressed on potential future actions, he held the official line: "We don't comment other than to say we have a strong dollar policy."

Bessent's statements provided immediate support for the U.S. currency, which had been under significant pressure. The dollar index, a key metric tracking the greenback against a basket of major currencies, climbed 0.5% to 96.391.
This rally reversed a recent slump that saw the index hit 95.86 on Tuesday, its lowest point since February 2022. The dollar's performance has been lackluster, with the index down nearly 2% for the year after a 9.4% decline in the previous year.
The dollar's recent weakness has also benefited safe-haven assets. Gold prices surged past the $5,300 per ounce mark for the first time, capitalizing on the currency's slide.
The Treasury Secretary's remarks stood in contrast to recent signals from the White House that had emboldened dollar bears. Just a day earlier, President Donald Trump described the dollar's value as "great," a comment that many traders interpreted as a green light to intensify selling ahead of a Federal Reserve policy decision.
The dollar has faced headwinds from several factors, including:
• Uncertainty surrounding U.S. interest rates and trade tariffs.
• Concerns over the independence of the Federal Reserve.
• A growing fiscal deficit.
Looking beyond short-term market volatility, Bessent argued that the administration's economic policies are the true foundation of the dollar's long-term value. He expressed confidence that tax and deregulation initiatives are making the U.S. more attractive to investors, projecting that trillions of dollars in capital would flow into the country.
"Over time the prices on the screen can fluctuate over six months, a year," Bessent stated. "If we have sound policies the money will flow in, and we are bringing down our trade deficits so they, automatically that should lead to more dollar strength over time."
Despite forecasting strong economic performance for the year, Bessent downplayed concerns that this growth could trigger a spike in inflation.
He suggested that productivity and wage growth would not necessarily lead to higher prices. Furthermore, he noted that declining rents could eventually contribute to a decrease in measured inflation, providing a buffer against price pressures.
