The latest preliminary S&P Global UK Composite PMI data for May, released on Thursday, sent a clear signal of an economic slowdown. Weighed down by the spillover effects of the geopolitical conflict in Iran and domestic political uncertainty, UK business activity contracted more broadly than at any time in over a year. The data shows that the UK’s preliminary composite PMI for May fell sharply from 52.6 in April to 48.5. This figure is not only significantly lower than the 51.6 forecast in a Reuters survey but also marks the first time since April 2025 that it has fallen below the 50-point threshold separating expansion from contraction, clearly indicating that UK economic activity has shifted from an expansionary phase into a contractionary one.
Financial markets expect the Federal Reserve to keep the overnight interest rate in the 3.50%–3.75% range unchanged next year. The minutes of the Federal Reserve’s 28–29 April meeting, released on Wednesday, revealed that as tensions escalated last month and inflation concerns mounted, an increasing number of policymakers indicated that preparations should be made for potential interest rate rises. The minutes also showed that policymakers “generally expected labour market conditions to remain stable in the near term”, but most believed that “risks to the employment aspect of the Federal Reserve’s dual mandate were tilted to the downside”.
Technical Analysis
On the daily chart, the GBP/USD pair shows the Bollinger Bands widening downwards and moving averages diverging downwards, indicating that the downtrend remains intact. The MACD fast and slow lines have fallen below the zero line, and the RSI stands at 46, indicating that market sentiment is predominantly bearish. On the four-hour chart, the Bollinger Bands are narrowing and the moving averages are flattening, suggesting a potential reversal at any moment. With the RSI at 50, the market has entered a neutral zone, and there is a high probability of a further decline towards the lower Bollinger Band. The recommended strategy is to sell on rallies.
