Market Likely to Revisit 216.00 Ahead of the BoJ Meeting

          Eva Chen
          Summary:

As the Bank of Japan's June policy meeting approaches, risk sentiment and positioning battles in the FX market have intensified. Reports suggesting that the BoJ may pause the reduction of its bond purchases have reignited yen-funded carry trades, while GBP/JPY extended its gains on Wednesday, with its medium- to long-term bullish structure remaining firmly intact.

          Fundamentals

Market attention this week is entirely focused on the upcoming June policy meeting of the Bank of Japan. Recent reports indicate that although the BoJ faces mounting inflationary pressure that could justify raising its policy rate to 1.0%, policymakers appear more inclined to adopt an "open-ended framework" for quantitative tightening (QT) and suspend further reductions in government bond purchases. This relatively dovish stance on the asset-purchase side has helped stabilize the Japanese government bond market but has also renewed selling pressure on the yen due to its ongoing yield disadvantage in the short and medium term.
From a capital flow and cross-currency perspective, investors appear increasingly willing to re-establish bearish yen positions ahead of the BoJ decision. This has encouraged GBP/JPY to challenge the previous selling zone around 160.00 once again. Against the backdrop of broad-based yen weakness, sterling has demonstrated stronger relative strength, supported by the resilience of the UK economy and still-firm expectations regarding monetary policy. As carry-trade flows return and technical conditions align, GBP/JPY has launched a constructive rebound.
Market Likely to Revisit 216.00 Ahead of the BoJ Meeting_1

          Technical Analysis

GBP/JPY maintained a positive tone on Wednesday, with buyers continuing to reclaim key short-term moving averages. The rebound has developed at a steep pace, and the pair is expected to initially revisit the previous selling area around 216.00. After absorbing supply at higher levels, price action may enter a temporary consolidation phase near this region.
On the upside, traders should closely monitor the market's attempt to challenge the previous all-time high at 216.62. A decisive breakout above this level, supported by strong buying volume, would confirm the continuation of the primary bullish trend and open the door to a much broader medium-term advance.
On the downside, should bullish momentum unexpectedly fade and sellers regain control, immediate attention should shift to the weekly low at 212.92. A break below this level would invalidate the current rebound structure and expose the pair to a deeper correction toward the critical support zone between 211.25 and 210.42, which represents a major battleground between bulls and bears.

          Trade Recommendation

          Direction: Buy
          Entry: 214.55
          Target: 216.00
          Stop Loss: 212.90
          Valid Until: July 9, 2026, 23:55
          Support Levels: 213.00, 213.62, 211.82
          Resistance Levels: 214.67, 215.36, 216.09
