Trump Signals Rate Cuts With His Fed Chair Nominee

President Donald Trump on Friday signaled his preference for lower interest rates, stating he is confident that his nominee for Federal Reserve chair, Kevin Warsh, shares his view.

While Trump noted it would be inappropriate to directly ask Warsh about his specific plans for monetary policy, he expressed certainty about his nominee's direction.

"I want to keep it nice and pure," Trump told reporters. However, he added that Warsh has previously favored rate cuts, concluding, "He's going to want to do the same thing."

Senate Confirmation Battle Looms for Trump's Pick

Despite Trump's confidence, the nomination faces a significant political hurdle from within the Republican party. Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina has pledged to block any Federal Reserve nominee until a Justice Department investigation into the current Fed chair, Jerome Powell, is "fully and transparently resolved."

Trump dismissed the threat, labeling the senator's move as obstructionist. "If he doesn't approve, we just have to wait until somebody comes in that will approve it," Trump said. "I saw that; he wants to be an obstructionist."

The Math Behind the Blockade

Tillis, who is not seeking re-election in 2026, holds a critical position on the Senate Banking Committee, which oversees Fed confirmations. The committee has a narrow 13-11 Republican majority.

The loss of even a single Republican vote could stall the nomination, preventing it from reaching the full Senate for a vote. In the full chamber, Republicans hold a slim three-vote majority, making any opposition from within the party a serious obstacle to the confirmation process.
