A criminal investigation into Fed Chair Powell ignites a political showdown, raising alarms over central bank independence.
A criminal investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell has ignited a political showdown, prompting a Republican senator to vow he will block all of the central bank's nominations. The move escalates tensions over the Federal Reserve's independence from political influence.
Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, a member of the influential banking committee, announced Sunday that he will oppose every nominee for the Fed, including the next chair, "until this legal matter is fully resolved." Tillis, who is set to retire at the end of his term this year, framed the situation as a direct threat to the central bank's autonomy.

"If there were any remaining doubt whether advisers within the Trump Administration are actively pushing to end the independence of the Federal Reserve, there should now be none," Tillis wrote on X, adding, "It is now the independence and credibility of the Department of Justice that are in question."
The controversy stems from a subpoena the Justice Department issued to the Federal Reserve on Friday. The investigation is reportedly linked to testimony Powell gave before the Senate in June concerning the rising costs of the Fed's headquarters renovation.
Powell confirmed the subpoena on Sunday, describing the investigation as part of a broader pressure campaign tied to the administration's dissatisfaction with the Fed's interest rate policy.
"No one – certainly not the chair of the Federal Reserve – is above the law," Powell said in a video statement posted by the Federal Reserve. "But this unprecedented action should be seen in the broader context of the administration's threats and ongoing pressure."
Since taking office last January, President Donald Trump has maintained a year-long campaign pressing Powell to lower interest rates. He has also repeatedly suggested he might remove the Fed chair, though he has not yet taken that step. With Powell's term expiring in May, Trump told Politico last month that his primary criterion for a successor would be their willingness to cut rates immediately.
Speaking to NBC News on Sunday, Trump denied any knowledge of the investigation but did not hold back his criticism of Powell's job performance. "I don't know anything about it, but he's certainly not very good at the Fed, and he's not very good at building buildings," the president said.
Trump also rejected the idea that the subpoena was related to interest rates. "No. I wouldn't even think of doing it that way," he stated. "What should pressure him is the fact that rates are far too high. That's the only pressure he's got."
The Federal Reserve is structured as an independent government entity specifically to insulate monetary policy from short-term political interference. Economists widely agree that this independence is crucial for maintaining economic stability and market credibility.
Powell directly addressed this principle in his statement, connecting the investigation to his policy decisions. "The threat of criminal charges is a consequence of the Federal Reserve setting interest rates based on our best assessment of what will serve the public, rather than following the preferences of the President," he wrote.
