Upward Revision to Keep Targeting Dynamic Resistance

          Eva Chen

          Commodity

          Central Bank

          Summary:

Crude oil appears to be gaining some support from the unwinding of long US dollar positions ahead of the FOMC decision. Buyers may regain the upper hand in the near term. There is still room for the market to rise before reaching overbought territory.

          Fundamentals

WTI crude oil fell below $76.00 per barrel on Friday, with a weekly decline of 1.9%. The weekly open interest report from ICE Futures Europe shows that for the week ending June 4, fund managers reduced their net long positions in Brent crude by 102,075 contracts to 45,678 contracts, the lowest level of net long positions since September 2014. CFTC data indicates that bullish sentiment for Brent and WTI crude oil hit a six-month low for the week ending June 4.
Crude oil appears to be gaining some support from the unwinding of long US dollar positions ahead of this week's FOMC decision. No actual policy changes are expected, but the statement will be accompanied by the latest dot plot projections, which could influence the outlook for borrowing costs.
Downgrades in economic growth and inflation expectations could reignite calls for rate cuts this year, potentially leading to a weaker dollar and higher prices for risk assets such as commodities. Conversely, upward revisions in expectations could reinforce a "higher for longer" view, translating into safe-haven flows that favor the dollar while dragging down crude oil prices.
Upward Revision to Keep Targeting Dynamic Resistance_1

          Technical Analysis

WTI crude oil remains in correction mode and appears ready to continue its upward adjustment from current levels. The price seems to be targeting the 50% Fibonacci retracement level, which aligns with other pivot points.
Specifically, the Fibonacci level is near the minor psychological level of $76.50, the 200 SMA dynamic resistance, and the previous support area. If this level sufficiently caps the rally, crude oil may continue to decline to the swing low at $72.28 or lower.
The 100 SMA is below the 200 SMA, confirming that the path of least resistance is downwards, or that resistance levels are more likely to hold rather than be broken. The widening gap between the indicators reflects increased selling pressure.
However, the stochastic oscillator is pointing higher to show that buying interest might regain dominance in the short term. This oscillator has room to climb before reaching overbought territory.
On the other hand, the RSI is heading south so prices could follow suit as bearish pressure picks up. Some bearish divergence can be observed, as the oscillator makes lower highs while prices make higher highs.
