The New START treaty, the last US-Russia nuclear arms pact, expires, sparking strategic stability concerns.
The last remaining nuclear arms control treaty between Russia and the United States is set to expire, the Kremlin confirmed on Thursday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov announced that the New START treaty, a cornerstone agreement limiting the strategic warheads, missiles, and launchers of both nations, would officially end.
"Today the day will end, and it will cease to have any effect," Peskov stated to reporters, clarifying the timeline after some arms control experts had previously anticipated the treaty would expire on Wednesday.
According to Peskov, Russia had previously suggested a one-year voluntary extension of the agreement to create time for negotiating a successor treaty. However, he claimed the United States did not provide a formal response to the proposal.
"The agreement is coming to an end," Peskov said. "We view this negatively and express our regret."
The Kremlin spokesman also noted that the issue was a topic of discussion during a Wednesday phone call between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Despite the treaty's expiration, Peskov affirmed that Russia would continue to follow a "responsible and attentive approach to the issue of strategic stability in the field of nuclear weapons."
He added that the country's future actions on this front would be guided by its own national interests.
