USD/JPY Drops to 155.80 as US-Iran Deal Hopes Weigh on Dollar

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

USD/JPY slides to 155.80 as easing US-Iran tensions weaken the Dollar, while suspected Japanese intervention accelerates Yen gains.

The US Dollar weakened sharply against the Japanese Yen on Wednesday, with USD/JPY falling over 1.3% to trade near 155.80, as improving geopolitical sentiment and suspected Japanese intervention combined to drive a decisive move lower.
The shift in momentum comes as reports from Axios suggest that the United States and Iran are close to reaching a memorandum of understanding aimed at de-escalating tensions and reopening negotiations over Tehran’s nuclear program. The proposed framework reportedly includes easing restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz, alongside sanctions relief and the release of frozen Iranian funds.
Sources cited by Reuters indicate that both sides are nearing a deal, with a response from Iran expected within days. In my view, this development has triggered a notable unwind of the geopolitical risk premium that had supported the US Dollar in recent sessions.
Reflecting this shift, the US Dollar Index has dropped toward the 97.70 region, adding further downside pressure to USD/JPY as investors rotate into risk-sensitive assets.
At the same time, markets are increasingly convinced that Japanese authorities have stepped back into the FX market. Following last week’s estimated ¥5.48 trillion intervention after USD/JPY breached 160.00, Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama has reiterated Tokyo’s readiness to act against excessive currency moves. Analysts at MUFG also suggest the latest drop aligns with renewed intervention activity.
Looking ahead, focus shifts to US labor data, with the ADP report due later today and Nonfarm Payrolls on Friday likely to shape the Dollar’s near-term trajectory. For now, easing geopolitical tensions and intervention risks are tilting USD/JPY to the downside.

Technical AnalysisUSD/JPY Drops to 155.80 as US-Iran Deal Hopes Weigh on Dollar_1

From a technical perspective, USD/JPY has transitioned from a prolonged range-bound structure into a fragile, short-term bearish setup. On the 2-hour chart, price action had been compressing within a broad sideways range before staging a sharp upside spike toward the 160.80–161.00 region, which was swiftly rejected. This rejection triggered an impulsive sell-off, breaking structure and shifting near-term momentum to the downside.
Currently, price is interacting with a rising trendline that had previously acted as dynamic support. The recent breakdown and subsequent retest of this trendline—now acting as resistance—suggests a potential trendline flip, reinforcing bearish pressure. The inability to sustain rebounds above the 157.50–158.00 zone indicates weakening bullish control and increases the likelihood of further downside continuation.
Although moving averages are not explicitly shown, price behavior relative to the structure suggests that short-term averages would now be flattening or turning lower, aligning with the developing bearish bias. A decisive break below the 155.00–155.20 support region would confirm continuation, exposing downside targets toward 153.00, followed by the psychologically significant 150.00 level. This aligns with the projected move illustrated on the chart.
On the upside, bulls would need to reclaim and hold above 158.00 to invalidate the immediate bearish outlook. A sustained move beyond 159.50 would be required to re-establish bullish structure and reopen the path toward the 160.00–161.00 highs.
Momentum indicators, inferred from price action, suggest deterioration rather than exhaustion. The sharp impulsive drop followed by weak corrective bounces reflects increasing selling pressure. This type of structure typically precedes continuation rather than reversal, unless a strong reclaim of broken support occurs.
          TRADE RECOMMENDATION
          SELL USD/JPY
          ENTRY PRICE: 155.80
          STOP LOSS: 158.20
          TAKE PROFIT: 150.50
