Israel reopened the Rafah crossing for limited pedestrian traffic as part of a fragile U.S.-brokered peace plan, yet strict security and a precarious ceasefire persist.
Israel has reopened the critical Rafah border crossing to pedestrian traffic, allowing Palestinians to move between the Gaza Strip and Egypt. The move comes as part of a fragile, U.S.-brokered plan to end the war that began after the Hamas attack of October 7, 2023.
The reopening marks a significant development since Israeli forces seized control of the crossing in May 2024. However, access remains limited and subject to strict security protocols.

The resumption of foot traffic is not a full return to normal. Israel is requiring security checks for all Palestinians entering and exiting Gaza, and both Israeli and Egyptian authorities are expected to enforce caps on the daily number of travelers.
An Israeli security official confirmed that European monitoring teams have arrived at the crossing, stating it "has now opened to the movement of residents, for both entry and exit." This step fulfills a key requirement of the first phase of a broader peace plan brokered by U.S. President Donald Trump, which led to an October ceasefire between Israel and Hamas militants.
For the first nine months of the war, the Rafah crossing was the primary escape route for Palestinians. Officials estimate that around 100,000 people fled Gaza during this period, some with assistance from aid groups and others by paying bribes in Egypt to secure passage.
Israel’s seizure of Rafah and the adjacent Philadelphi corridor in May 2024 effectively sealed Gaza's southern border. The closure cut off a crucial route for sick and wounded Palestinians needing medical treatment abroad. While a few thousand patients have been permitted to leave through Israel for care in other countries over the last year, the United Nations reports that thousands more still require urgent medical evacuation.
The conflict has left much of Gaza in ruins, with its population of approximately 2 million people living in makeshift tents and damaged buildings.
Despite the crossing's reopening for Palestinians, Israel continues to ban foreign journalists from entering the Gaza Strip. This prohibition has been in place since the war started.
The Foreign Press Association (FPA) has petitioned Israel's Supreme Court, demanding that foreign journalists be granted access. Government lawyers have defended the ban, citing potential risks to Israeli soldiers and the reporters themselves.
The FPA refutes these claims, arguing that the public is being denied essential independent information. The organization also notes that many aid and United Nations workers have been consistently allowed into the territory throughout the conflict.
The Trump-brokered plan is now in its second phase, which envisions a Palestinian technocratic government taking control of Gaza, the disarmament of Hamas, and a full withdrawal of Israeli troops as rebuilding commences.
However, skepticism remains high. Israeli officials have expressed doubts that Hamas will lay down its arms, and some reports indicate the military is preparing for a potential resumption of hostilities.
The ceasefire has been tenuous. Since the October deal was signed, Israeli attacks in Gaza have killed over 500 Palestinians, according to health officials, while militant attacks have killed four Israeli soldiers. On Saturday, Israel conducted some of its most intense airstrikes since the truce began, killing at least 30 people. Israel stated the strikes were a response to a Hamas violation of the agreement on Friday.
