Copper Breaks Above $13,000 as US Import Premium Triggers Global Supply Squeeze

          Gerik

          Economic

          Commodity

          Summary:

Copper surged to a record $13,187 per ton as bullish speculation and a US-led import rush intensified global supply fears, driven by tariff uncertainty, disrupted mining output, and mounting demand from the energy transition....

Copper’s Meteoric Rise Fueled by US Tariff Uncertainty

Copper prices broke historic records this week, surpassing $13,000 per ton for the first time as buyers rushed to ship refined copper into the US ahead of potential tariff revisions. The benchmark three-month contract on the London Metal Exchange (LME) reached $13,187 per ton, extending a 20% rally that began in mid-November.
The primary force behind this surge is the persistent US price premium, a byproduct of tariff-related distortions in trade flows. President Donald Trump’s erratic tariff policies on metals particularly the brief exemption of refined copper have created an import rush that artificially inflates US demand, even though the US consumes less than 10% of global copper output. This has triggered a causal shock in global inventory distribution: the US now holds around half of total exchange-tracked stocks, leaving limited reserves elsewhere.

Speculative Momentum Builds Amid Global Supply Risks

The upward price movement is also driven by speculative traders betting on continued tightness through early 2026. According to Marex strategist Al Munro, many investors sidelined by earlier price volatility are now re-entering the market amid supply anxieties, adding significant liquidity and momentum to the rally.
A key driver of this sentiment has been the supply-side fragility of copper production. Disruptions last year including a fatal accident at Indonesia’s Grasberg mine (the world’s second-largest) and flooding in the Democratic Republic of Congo have weakened global output. Meanwhile, a recent strike at Chile’s Mantoverde mine has intensified concern about near-term availability.
The correlation between production volatility and speculative bullishness is direct: as miners face disruptions, traders anticipate scarcity, bidding up prices in anticipation of supply shocks.

Chronic Underinvestment Weakens Market’s Shock Absorption

Structural issues have deepened the rally. Analysts from ING and BMO note that years of underinvestment in new copper mining projects have left the market without a sufficient buffer. At the same time, long-term demand is accelerating due to copper’s critical role in electrification spanning power grids, EVs, and renewable infrastructure.
This imbalance represents a long-standing causal problem: insufficient capital allocation to upstream development has resulted in a fragile supply chain vulnerable to even modest disruptions. Even as copper demand rises, particularly for energy transition technologies, miners have not been able to scale production fast enough to meet future needs.

Global Inventory Mismatch Creates Asymmetric Risk

According to UBS, the copper market technically recorded a surplus in 2025. However, that surplus has been functionally negated by distorted inventory flows. US copper imports in December jumped to the highest levels since July, reflecting renewed stockpiling in anticipation of policy uncertainty. The cash-to-three-month spread in LME contracts remains in backwardation, confirming a tight near-term supply environment.
While the US amasses inventories, the rest of the world is being left exposed to sudden deficits. The causal link between policy-driven import surges and uneven inventory distribution has created a systemic fragility, making the market acutely sensitive to any further supply disturbances.

A Perfect Storm for Copper Bulls

The rally in copper is not merely the result of investor enthusiasm it is rooted in a convergence of speculative momentum, policy-induced trade distortions, production volatility, and chronic supply underinvestment. These dynamics have combined to create an exceptional price environment, where short-term premiums, long-term scarcity fears, and geopolitical uncertainty all reinforce upward price pressure.
While some analysts maintain that the fundamentals remain healthy, the risks of global mismatches, production shocks, and volatile policy interventions suggest that copper’s volatility is far from over. For now, however, the bulls remain firmly in control.
