Gold started the week under renewed selling pressure, with XAU/USD falling around 1.23% to $4,295 as markets increasingly position for another Federal Reserve interest rate hike. The metal briefly touched $4,278, its weakest level since August 7, as rising Treasury yields and a stronger US Dollar continue to outweigh demand generated by geopolitical uncertainty.

Expectations for tighter US monetary policy strengthened considerably following Friday’s inflation report. Headline CPI accelerated to 0.4% month-on-month in August from 0.1% in July, while core inflation increased 0.3%, compared with 0.2% previously and its strongest monthly pace in four months. Markets now assign roughly an 86% probability of a quarter-point Fed hike, compared with just 59.4% a week earlier.

The inflation outlook is being complicated further by the surge in energy prices. WTI is hovering around $99 per barrel after climbing more than 15% this month, raising concerns that higher fuel and transportation costs could keep inflation elevated and encourage the Fed to maintain a restrictive policy stance.

Middle East tensions remain at the center of the oil rally. Iran-aligned Houthis have reported capturing additional strategic islands near the Bab el-Mandeb shipping route, while Saudi Arabia shut its East-West pipeline following a drone attack. At the same time, a planned meeting between Iran and Gulf Arab states concerning a temporary shipping arrangement through the Strait of Hormuz has been postponed, further increasing uncertainty surrounding regional energy flows.

Despite those geopolitical risks, Gold has struggled to attract its usual safe-haven demand. Instead, investors appear increasingly focused on the consequences of higher inflation and tighter monetary policy.

The US Dollar Index has climbed toward 99.57, its strongest level since September 3, while the benchmark 10-year Treasury yield is holding near 4.95%, not far below last week’s three-year peak of 4.99%. That combination is particularly unfavorable for the non-yielding precious metal and has intensified the latest downside move.

Attention now turns squarely toward the Fed. A 25-basis-point hike accompanied by hawkish guidance could maintain pressure on Gold and potentially extend the current correction. However, with a hike now heavily priced into markets, the greater source of volatility may come from the Fed’s guidance on what happens next. A less aggressive message—or an unexpected decision to leave rates unchanged—could weaken the Dollar and yields and give Gold an opportunity to recover.

Technical Analysis

Gold is showing a clear deterioration in its 4-hour structure, with the decline from the $4,680 region developing into a broader bearish reversal. The chart highlights a head-and-shoulders formation, and the subsequent sequence of lower highs has reinforced the loss of bullish momentum.

XAU/USD is now trading around $4,284, placing significant pressure on the major $4,280–$4,320 support zone. This area has previously attracted buyers and remains the immediate barrier preventing another substantial leg lower. However, repeated tests have weakened the zone, while the latest move has pushed price toward its lower boundary.

A short-term recovery remains possible from current levels. Gold could rebound toward $4,320–$4,340, but such a move would currently look more like a corrective retest than a reversal. Sellers are likely to remain interested unless price can reclaim the higher $4,440–$4,460 resistance zone, which has repeatedly rejected recovery attempts since the initial breakdown.

A decisive 4-hour break beneath $4,280 would provide stronger confirmation that the bearish continuation is underway. That would expose $4,200 initially, followed by the broader $4,000 psychological region. The chart's projected structure ultimately points toward the $3,970–$3,990 support zone, an area that previously acted as a major base before Gold's August rally.

The bearish outlook would begin to lose conviction if buyers regain $4,320 and subsequently break through $4,450. Until then, the combination of the head-and-shoulders structure, repeated lower highs and pressure on major support keeps the technical bias tilted firmly toward further downside.
