Oil Prices Surge as US-Iran Conflict Returns to Hormuz

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

WTI rebounds toward $84.40 after a tanker incident involving naval mines and renewed US-Iran military exchanges around the Strait of Hormuz. Geopolitical risks are supporting crude, although recovering Persian Gulf exports could limit the extent of the rally.

WTI crude oil has returned to the upside at the start of the week, with prices climbing toward $84.40 per barrel during Monday’s Asian session. The rebound follows another sharp escalation around the Strait of Hormuz, reviving concerns over the security of one of the region’s most important oil-export routes.
The latest catalyst came after Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps reported that a supertanker caught fire after striking two naval mines along the southern passage of the Strait. Iranian officials claimed the vessel had attempted to cross the waterway illegally and warned that maritime traffic must comply with Tehran’s rules governing passage through the area.
The incident was followed by a broader military escalation. Iran launched ballistic and anti-ship cruise missiles from several locations, including Tehran, Lorestan, Karaj, Khorramabad and Shiraz, targeting positions around the Strait of Hormuz.
Those strikes were described as retaliation for an earlier US attack on Iranian launcher facilities at Larak Island. The US operation targeted rocket positions reportedly being prepared to deploy naval mines in the waterway, marking the first direct American strike against Iranian military positions in more than a month.
The renewed confrontation represents a significant change from the recent period in which Washington had largely relied on economic pressure rather than direct military action in its effort to push Tehran back toward negotiations. With military exchanges returning and naval mines again becoming part of the equation, traders are once more being forced to price the possibility of disruption to regional energy flows.
That explains the immediate reaction in WTI. Any deterioration in security around Hormuz can quickly introduce a geopolitical premium into crude prices, particularly when shipping and export infrastructure become directly exposed to the conflict.
However, the supply picture could prevent the latest rally from developing unchecked.
Brown Brothers Harriman highlighted estimates from Goldman Sachs showing that Persian Gulf oil exports have recovered to roughly two-thirds of their pre-war levels, helped by an increasing number of vessels successfully navigating the Strait. Improving export flows suggest that physical supply conditions are gradually becoming less restrictive despite the continued security risks.
The result is a crude market being pulled in two directions. Fresh military escalation is rebuilding the geopolitical risk premium, while recovering Persian Gulf exports are limiting fears of an immediate supply shortage. For WTI, the sustainability of the move above $84 will therefore depend heavily on whether the latest confrontation begins disrupting actual oil flows or remains primarily a security risk surrounding the waterway.

Technical AnalysisOil Prices Surge as US-Iran Conflict Returns to Hormuz_1

The WTI 4-hour chart is showing a constructive bullish shift, with crude recovering strongly from the recent decline toward $79.00 and returning to the key $83.00–$84.50 region. Price is currently around $84.35, where the market is attempting to turn an important resistance area into a platform for another leg higher.
The latest recovery has produced a sequence of higher lows and higher highs from the late-August bottom. More importantly, WTI has pushed back through the $83.00 area and is now challenging the $84.30–$84.50 barrier, which has repeatedly influenced price action over the past several weeks. A firm break and hold above this level would strengthen the argument that buyers have regained control after the recent correction.
A short-term retest remains possible before the next expansion higher. The $82.80–$83.80 zone represents the most important nearby support, and holding this region on a pullback would preserve the bullish structure. Such a retest could provide the base needed for another attempt through $84.50.
Once that resistance is convincingly cleared, the chart leaves room for a stronger advance. Initial upside attention would shift toward $86.50–$87.00, but the larger technical objective sits around $92.00–$93.00, where a major supply zone is visible from the previous rally.
A successful breakout through $93.00 would represent a much more significant change in the broader structure and could open the way toward the $95.00 area, followed by an extension toward the psychological $100.00 level.
The bullish scenario would begin to lose credibility if WTI falls back beneath the $82.80 support region. That would expose the recent lows around $79.00, while a more substantial breakdown would bring the major $73.00–$74.00 demand zone back into consideration.
For now, the recovery remains intact. WTI is testing a major breakout point after establishing higher lows, and holding above the $83.00 region would keep the path tilted toward $92.00–$93.00 before a potential extension toward $100.00.
