The Euro is struggling to maintain momentum against the Japanese Yen at the start of the week, with EUR/JPY easing around 0.1% toward 185.20 during European trading. The latest pressure is being driven primarily by renewed Yen demand as traders increasingly position for another Bank of Japan interest-rate increase in September.

Expectations surrounding the BoJ have shifted considerably. According to Commerzbank, market pricing now assigns roughly an 84% probability to a September rate hike, placing investors firmly on the side of near-term tightening. The difficulty is that policymakers themselves have yet to provide the same degree of certainty.

BoJ Deputy Governor Himino maintained that cautious approach in his latest remarks, avoiding a firm indication of when the next policy move could arrive. This leaves a noticeable divide between what markets are pricing and what the central bank has actually communicated. For the Yen, however, the prospect of tighter policy has been enough to provide near-term support.

The Euro has its own monetary-policy catalyst approaching, which could determine whether EUR/JPY can regain some ground. Germany's preliminary HICP inflation reading for August is expected to accelerate to 3.0% year-on-year from 2.8% in July. A stronger inflation print would reinforce expectations that the European Central Bank still has another rate increase to deliver.

Markets are already close to fully pricing a 25-basis-point ECB hike in September, according to Danske Bank, although the outlook beyond that meeting appears less convincing. Recent inflation developments have included energy-driven increases in French and Spanish headline HICP, while underlying price momentum has remained comparatively subdued and French economic growth has softened.

Danske Bank consequently sees the recent data as slightly more dovish than current market pricing would suggest. Falling expectations among companies for future selling prices also support the argument that September could mark the final ECB increase for the time being, with the bank expecting one additional 25-basis-point move before policymakers pause.

That creates an interesting policy contest for EUR/JPY. Both central banks are facing expectations for September tightening, but the sharp repricing of BoJ expectations is currently giving the Yen the stronger near-term advantage. German inflation could shift that balance if price pressures surprise significantly to the upside, but until then, the Euro may struggle to generate a sustained recovery against the Yen.

Attention will then move toward Eurozone HICP figures on Tuesday, which should provide another important test of expectations surrounding the ECB's September decision.

Technical Analysis

The EUR/JPY 4-hour chart is beginning to show a more vulnerable structure, with the cross retreating from repeated failures around the 185.90–186.00 resistance area. Price has slipped toward 185.10, and the inability to establish a sustained break above the recent highs raises the risk that the recovery from early August is entering a deeper corrective phase.

The rejection around 185.90–186.00 is particularly important. EUR/JPY made several attempts to extend higher but repeatedly encountered selling pressure around the same region, leaving behind a consolidation structure beneath resistance. The latest decline has now pushed price back through the lower boundary of that range and toward the 185.00 area, suggesting that sellers are starting to gain greater control.

A short-term rebound remains possible from current levels, with 185.30–185.50 likely to act as the first area where sellers could re-emerge. Unless price can reclaim the 185.90–186.00 zone, however, any recovery would increasingly resemble a corrective bounce rather than a renewed bullish breakout.

The first significant downside objective sits around 183.90–184.10, an area that previously provided resistance before the August advance and could now serve as support. A clean break beneath this region would represent a more substantial deterioration in market structure and expose the next demand zone around 182.60–182.80.

Below there, the chart leaves room for a considerably deeper retracement toward 181.10–181.30. This represents the strongest lower support visible on the current setup and aligns with the projected bearish path if selling momentum continues to build.

The near-term bias therefore favours further weakness while EUR/JPY remains capped below 186.00. Repeated rejection from resistance followed by the latest breakdown around 185.20 suggests the balance is shifting toward sellers, with 184.00 representing the first major test before 182.70 and potentially 181.20 come into focus.
