Tensions in Northern Myanmar

Washington's mixed signals on Myanmar suggest a troubling shift toward re-engaging the brutal military junta.

The Arakan Army (AA) has captured significant territory in Rakhine State and is striving to establish itself as the legitimate government by providing public services and infrastructure.

On November 9, the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a notice bluntly stating that the security situation in northern Myanmar is complex and severe, reminding Chinese citizens not to travel to northern Myanmar for the time being, and calling on Chinese citizens to move to a safe zone or return home as soon as possible while ensuring safety.

The United Nations on Monday (November 6) expressed concern about "fierce fighting" in northern Myanmar between the Myanmar army and the northern ethnic minority alliance, which has caused civilian casualties and displaced more than 30,000 people.
