A falling share price can coexist with a positive return. Reconcile dividends, withholding, fees and reinvestment with a worked example and a clear break-even price.
A share can fall from 20 to 19 without wiping 5% off its holder's pre-tax wealth. If it goes ex-dividend for a cash distribution of 1, part of the value previously attached to the share has become a separate dividend entitlement. The right comparison is shares plus that entitlement, followed by taxes and costs—not the price chart alone.
That is not a free-money trade. The market need not open exactly one dividend lower, the payment may arrive later, and deductions can leave the investor worse off. To establish the return, follow the original outlay through to the shares and cash that remain.

The record date identifies holders on the register. The ex-dividend date determines whether the next distribution travels with a purchase. The payment date concerns delivery of the money. Exchange rules, settlement cycles, holidays and special distributions can change their relationship. Use the issuer's announcement and the relevant exchange timetable; a calendar shortcut learned in one market may fail in another.
Consider a hypothetical ordinary cash dividend. An eligible investor owns 100 shares bought at 20, an initial outlay of 2,000. The gross dividend is 1 a share. Ignoring other changes, a reference value of 19 after the shares go ex-dividend gives 1,900 in shares plus a dividend receivable of 100: still 2,000 before tax. The receivable may form part of economic wealth without being available to trade or withdraw. A broker's cash balance and a total-value calculation can therefore differ temporarily.
All amounts below use one notional currency. There is no borrowing, short selling or outside cash contribution. Prices, deductions and fees are teaching assumptions, not live quotes or a statement of any country's tax rules.
Suppose the 100 shares are later sold at 19.60, yielding 1,960. Assume 20% of the dividend is withheld, leaving 80, and a fee of 4 is charged only on the final sale. There was no purchase fee and the dividend was not reinvested.
| Measure | Calculation | Return |
|---|---|---|
| Price only | 1,960 / 2,000 − 1 | −2% |
| With gross dividend | 2,060 / 2,000 − 1 | 3% |
| Net dividend, after fee | 2,036 / 2,000 − 1 | 1.8% |
The last figure is 1,960 plus 80 less 4, a profit of 36. Each measure answers a different question. Price return tracks the security's quote; gross total return adds the distribution; this net account return includes the stated deductions. Comparing a pre-tax reinvestment benchmark with a taxed, cash-paying account can make a measurement difference look like investment skill—or a lack of it.
If a purchase fee was actually paid, include it in the opening cash outlay rather than keeping 2,000 as the full cost. For a foreign holding, translate the investment, distributions and closing value consistently into the account's base currency. Otherwise currency moves become an unexplained part of the supposed stock return.
In the cash-dividend case, break-even is (2,000 − 80 + 4) / 100 = 19.24. The shares do not have to recover to 20 for this account to recover its original outlay. A price chart returning to its pre-dividend level and an investor breaking even are different events.
Nor does the dividend provide a floor. A sale at 18.80 leaves 1,880 + 80 − 4 = 1,956, a loss of 44 or 2.2%. A dividend of 1 divided by a purchase price of 20 is a 5% dividend yield, not a guaranteed 5% holding-period gain. Another distribution depends on subsequent earnings, cash resources and the company's decision.
The ex-dividend step is therefore not, by itself, an oversold signal or a promise that a gap will close. Earnings news, broad-market moves and liquidity conditions may occur at the same time. Separate those influences rather than attributing every price change to the dividend.
Now take a different path. After the net dividend arrives, 80 is invested at an actual execution price of 19.20. Assume fractional shares are available and reinvestment is free. The purchase adds 4.1667 shares, taking the holding to 104.1667. At a closing price of 19.60, the shares are worth about 2,041.67. With the same assumed final sale fee of 4, net proceeds are about 2,037.67: a return of 1.8833% on the original 2,000.
Do not add another 80. It is already represented by the extra shares. Do not substitute the ex-dividend reference price of 19 for the actual reinvestment price of 19.20, either. Payment timing, execution, fractional-share rules, fees and residual cash matter. If the final price instead falls to 18.80, the additional shares are worth about 78.33, less than holding 80 in cash. Reinvestment increases market exposure; it does not always improve the outcome.
A formal reinvestment plan follows its own execution terms. An investor placing a separate limit order must still obtain a fill. The distinction explained in why a touched limit order can remain unfilled matters here: submitting an order is not evidence that the share count increased.
Raw prices help verify actual trades. Dividend-adjusted histories improve comparability, but the adjustment label alone does not establish tax treatment or reinvestment assumptions. A total-return index follows a defined dividend-reinvestment methodology; it is not a copy of an investor's payment dates and fills. Adding cash dividends to a return series that already includes them counts the same income twice.
The chart shows what happened to the share price. The statement shows where the distribution went. A defensible return calculation needs both.
