Collecting $200 is not the same as earning $200. Reconcile a covered call through expiry payoffs, interim marks and a roll ledger before treating option premiums as income.
A covered call exchanges part of a stock position’s upside for an upfront premium. It does not put a floor under the shares or turn equity risk into a bond coupon. If selling the shares at the strike is unacceptable—or a large fall would make the stock holding unacceptable—a tempting premium does not resolve the mismatch.
The word covered refers to the ability to deliver shares against the call, not to protection against investment losses. Four separate calculations make the distinction visible: cash collected, current liquidation value, expiry profit and the accounting for a roll. The figures below are hypothetical, not live quotes.

Buy 100 shares at $100 and sell one call with a $105 strike for $2 per share. Assume this particular contract delivers 100 shares: the premium is $200, the stock costs $10,000 and the net initial outlay is $9,800. Check the actual multiplier and deliverable, especially after corporate actions; 100 shares is not a rule for every option product.
The premium arrives with a liability. Suppose, before expiry, the shares reach $103 and the same call would cost $4.20 per share to buy back. Stock profit is $300; the option has a $220 loss against the $200 originally collected. The combined mark-to-market gain is only $80, before spreads and fees. Counting the cash while ignoring the short option’s value produces a misleading performance chart.
Use executable liquidation prices when assessing an exit: a stock sale and an option repurchase involve opposite sides of their bid–ask spreads. A last trade or midpoint is not a promised fill.
First set aside dividends, financing, taxes, transaction costs and early assignment. At expiry the economic profit per share is min(final stock price, $105) − $100 + $2. Above the strike, the short call offsets additional stock gains; below it, the premium merely cushions the decline.
| Stock at expiry | Covered position, 100 shares | Shares alone |
|---|---|---|
| $80 | −$1,800 | −$2,000 |
| $98 | $0 | −$200 |
| $100 | +$200 | $0 |
| $105 | +$700 | +$500 |
| $120 | +$700 | +$2,000 |
The expiry break-even is $98 and maximum profit is $700. A worthless stock still leaves a $9,800 loss. At $120 the position makes money but trails the shares by $1,300. Profitability and outperformance are different claims. The payoff reaches its ceiling at the strike; that mathematical fact does not guarantee an operational assignment at exactly that price.
A call expiring worthless is not, by itself, evidence of success. It can accompany a severe stock loss. The relevant bargain is whether the premium compensates for the upside sold while leaving most downside exposure intact.
For the same underlying and expiry, a lower call strike generally collects more premium while limiting gains sooner. A higher strike usually preserves more upside for less cash. Rich premiums in a volatile market also price substantial movement; they are not free return. An increase in implied volatility can make the call more expensive to repurchase, even as time passes.
Maximum profit of $700 is 7% of the $10,000 stock purchase but about 7.14% of the $9,800 net outlay. State which denominator you use. Neither number is an earned return or an annual rate: each describes the best expiry outcome for this one holding period.
If total costs for the completed position are assumed to be $12, maximum net profit becomes $688 and break-even becomes $98.12. Real costs may vary with the exit route. Multiplying a monthly 2% premium ratio by twelve ignores changing stock prices, option prices, strikes and whether the shares remain in the account.
Suppose the old call brought in $200 but now costs $500 to close. That option has realized a $300 loss. Sell a new call, with a different expiry or strike, for $600 and the roll itself brings in a net $100. The new $600 receipt comes with a new short-option liability; it is not immediately earned profit.
Total option cash since inception is $200 − $500 + $600 = $300. That ledger contains an old realized loss and a still-open obligation. Stock profit or loss sits alongside it. Reporting only the net cash credit makes a losing roll look like a profitable investment.
Reassess the new strike, term, covered share count and executable prices. Selling the shares without closing the call removes the cover and can leave theoretically unlimited short-call loss. A stock stop and an option-closing order are separate instructions, not a guaranteed coordinated exit.
An American-style short call can be assigned before expiry. An in-the-money call approaching an ex-dividend date with little time value deserves particular attention, but no single dividend threshold guarantees exercise. Do not assume a future dividend is yours if assignment changes entitlement.
European exercise, cash-settled index options and physically delivered equity options require different operational checks. A loosely correlated basket is not automatically an exact cover for an index contract. Verify the deliverable, multiplier, settlement method, corporate actions and broker deadlines rather than importing rules from a different market.
Near the strike, the closing stock price alone does not settle assignment uncertainty. Confirm notices and positions before disposing of the same shares again. If keeping the stock is non-negotiable, the delivery obligation conflicts with the objective. If the objective is a downside floor, compare the maximum loss and premium cost of a protective put; a small premium cushion is not equivalent protection.
The decision turns on the upside surrendered, downside retained and net compensation received—not how often cash arrives. Evaluating all three makes the premium a tradeable price rather than a fixed-income label.
