No matching data
Rebuild two hypothetical limit-order books to see how a buy surplus becomes a sell surplus, why matched volume can rise as the candidate price falls, and which venue, timing and execution checks matter.
A buy-side closing auction imbalance is a description of eligible orders at a particular reference price and time. It is not a promise that the final close will rise. Later orders can change the balance; a different reference price can change which limits qualify; and a close above the auction reference can still be below yesterday’s close. The useful question is what the latest comparable snapshot says about price and executable quantity—not whether a single green number looks bullish.

Auction feeds separate quantities that a chart may casually label “imbalance.” At the NYSE, Unpaired Quantity includes eligible interest at the reference price as well as better-priced interest. Its named Imbalance field treats interest on the imbalance side differently: the distinction between strictly better-priced and at-priced orders matters. A subtraction of all eligible buys minus all eligible sells is therefore not automatically the exchange’s published Imbalance.
For the calculations below, B is eligible buy quantity, S is eligible sell quantity, Q = min(B, S) is matched quantity, and N = B − S is an arithmetic residual. A positive N means a buy surplus at that trial price. These are teaching measures. Matched quantity counts shares once: matching 700 bought with 700 sold represents 700 shares traded, not 1,400. Nor is the residual evidence of money entering the whole market; every completed trade has both a buyer and a seller.
Consider a fictional dollar-denominated stock with a one-cent tick. All the stated ordinary limit orders are eligible. There are no market orders, hidden quantities, price collars, allocation priorities or designated market maker decisions in this simplified model. It illustrates quantity arithmetic, not the full NYSE auction algorithm.
The buys are 800 shares at 100.02, 400 at 100.00 and 300 at 99.98. The sells are 400 at 99.96, 300 at 100.00 and 800 at 100.02. A buy qualifies when its limit is at least the trial price; a sell qualifies when its limit is no higher. Keep the teaching reference price fixed at 100.00.
| Trial price, USD | Eligible buys, shares | Eligible sells, shares | Matched shares | Arithmetic B − S, shares |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 99.98 | 1500 | 400 | 400 | +1100 |
| 100.00 | 1200 | 700 | 700 | +500 |
| 100.02 | 800 | 1500 | 800 | −700 |
At the reference price, buys total 1,200 and sells 700, leaving a 500-share buy residual. Yet the largest matched quantity is 800 at 100.02. The intervening prices do not beat it: 99.99 matches 400 and 100.01 matches 700. At 100.02 there is a sell residual because moving the price changes eligibility. A reference-price buy surplus does not mean every higher price also has excess buyers.
The field distinction is visible numerically: strictly better-priced buys at 100.00 total 800, versus 700 sells at or below that reference, a difference of 100 rather than 500. That limited comparison explains why two quantity labels can disagree; it is not a reconstruction of every production-feed inclusion rule.
Now add a sell limit for 1,200 shares at 99.98. Assume it is accepted during a period when the applicable venue rules permit it. Keep every original order; no execution or cancellation occurs between snapshots.
| Trial price, USD | Eligible buys, shares | Eligible sells, shares | Matched shares | Arithmetic B − S, shares |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 99.98 | 1500 | 1600 | 1500 | −100 |
| 100.00 | 1200 | 1900 | 1200 | −700 |
| 100.02 | 800 | 2700 | 800 | −1900 |
The maximum is now 1,500 matched shares at 99.98. The intermediate 99.99 price matches 1,200 and 100.01 matches 800. The reference-price residual has changed from +500 to −700, exactly the effect of adding 1,200 shares offered for sale. There is no mystery in the earlier buy signal failing to describe the later book: its inputs changed.
Candidate price falls by 0.04 dollars, approximately 4 basis points relative to 100.02, while maximum matched quantity rises from 800 to 1,500, or 87.5%. Neither candidate is a completed trade. The change is not an investor’s realized return. It demonstrates that a larger prospective auction does not, by itself, confirm upward pressure.
A residual is conditional on a price. A revised reference can admit or exclude limit orders without any new submission. Before attributing a change to fresh buying, compare both timestamps and references. Compare the same security, venue, field and unit; share counts across a low-priced and high-priced stock do not measure equal dollar demand.
The benchmark also changes the answer. In this example, 100.02 is above the 100.00 reference. If yesterday’s close were a hypothetical 101.00, that same 100.02 would still represent a daily decline of about 0.97%. Pressure relative to a nearby reference and return relative to yesterday are different comparisons.
Ratios of residual to paired quantity can be unstable when paired quantity is small. They do not supply a universal buy threshold or calibrated win rate. A stronger reading requires fresh, consistently defined quantities and price information that move together after accounting for reference changes.
For normal full NYSE trading sessions, the official auction timetable gives 3:50 p.m. US Eastern as the ordinary MOC/LOC entry cutoff. Qualifying orders that offset a significant imbalance are an exception; the closing auction process begins at 4 p.m. This does not mean the entire book becomes immutable at 3:50, or that every stock finishes at precisely 4:00:00.
NYSE Arca has a different publication and freeze timetable. Likewise, the NYSE’s Continuous Book Clearing Price and another venue’s Indicative Match Price are not interchangeable labels. Confirm the market and feed definition before combining a platform’s columns. Broker cutoffs, special sessions and daylight-saving conversions also need checking.
A historical chart may display minute averages rather than successive instantaneous messages. Averaging can hide a brief reversal, and a delayed screen cannot establish what could have been known or executed earlier. Preserve the original message time when evaluating a supposed signal.
An instruction to participate at the close prioritizes that benchmark, while a limit-on-close instruction adds an acceptable-price condition. A limit caps the price a buyer will accept or floors the price a seller will accept, but it does not guarantee allocation or execution. Eligibility, the final auction price and venue priority rules still matter.
Do not treat the indicative figure as a firm execution offer. If the objective is to complete an intended position, an attractive price on the filled portion can conceal the cost of shares left unfilled. That is why implementation shortfall includes both executed and unexecuted quantities. The best benchmark depends on the original mandate, not which measure looks favorable afterward.
A stale timestamp, changed reference, new order or missed entry cutoff can invalidate the original interpretation. The example supplies a reproducible way to investigate those changes. It supplies no fixed direction forecast and no claim that a simplified limit book replicates an exchange’s complete closing process.
