The House prepares to vote on a Senate-approved deal to end a partial government shutdown, facing bipartisan hurdles over immigration policy and slim majorities.

The U.S. House of Representatives is set to take up legislation on Monday to resolve a partial government shutdown that began over the weekend, with a final vote expected on Tuesday.
Funding for several federal agencies, including the Pentagon and the Department of Transportation, expired on Saturday due to a legislative dispute centered on immigration enforcement. The immediate impact has been minimal, as essential workers such as military troops and air traffic controllers have remained on the job.
A funding agreement that would end the shutdown has already passed the Senate with wide bipartisan support. Republican leaders in the House are now preparing for a swift vote to approve the measure.
Representative Tom Emmer of Minnesota, the third-ranking Republican in the chamber, confirmed the House is scheduled to vote on the deal Tuesday. Before the full vote, a House committee will consider the spending package, with debate potentially extending late into Monday night.
Despite momentum from the Senate, the bill's passage in the House is not guaranteed. Republicans control the chamber by a narrow 218-213 margin, leaving little room for error. The Democratic minority will soon gain another seat when Christian Menefee of Texas is sworn in.
Democratic Objections on Immigration Policy
Some House Democrats have raised objections to the funding deal, which was brokered between U.S. President Donald Trump and Senate leaders. They argue that the agreement should provide more time to negotiate new restrictions on federal immigration agents.
The push for new limits follows an incident last month where agents from the Department of Homeland Security killed two U.S. citizens in Minnesota, triggering widespread outrage.
Potential Republican Dissent
In addition to opposition from Democrats, some Republicans from the party's right flank may also object to the spending legislation.
This funding gap is expected to be short-lived, unlike the record-setting 43-day shutdown that occurred in October and November of 2025.
According to the Congressional Research Service, the government has weathered 10 funding gaps of three days or fewer since 1977. Most of these brief shutdowns had little tangible effect on the country.
