Shares of meatpackers JBS and Tyson Foods jumped Monday after Tyson said late last week it was closing one of its largest beef plants and slashing production at another.

Beef processors have been losing hundreds of millions of dollars over the past two years, with shrinking cattle herds driving livestock prices higher. Tyson said Friday it plans to close its Lexington, Neb., plant, which can kill about 5,000 cattle a day, while separately moving its Amarillo, Texas, plant, which can kill 6,000 cattle a day, from two shifts to one.

Tyson's plan reduces total beef industry slaughter capacity by about 8%, according to estimates from Oklahoma State University, and is expected to further tighten U.S. beef supplies, potentially driving consumer prices higher.

It could also help meat industry rivals, including JBS, which analysts expect to gain market share in beef sales.

The closure leaves Nebraska's ranchers and feedlots, which fatten cattle up before they are killed, with one fewer large buyer for their livestock. Live cattle futures-the price feedlots are paid for their livestock by meatpackers-declined about 3.4% on Monday and are down about 11% over the past month. Feeder cattle prices-what ranchers are paid for their cattle-fell 3%.
