Equities Mixed as Investors Parse Inflation Data; Nvidia Leads Tech Rally

US equity indexes ended mixed Tuesday as Wall Street digested official April inflation data, while technology stocks advanced led by Nvidia .

The Nasdaq Composite rose 1.6% to 19,010.1, while the S&P 500 climbed 0.7% to 5,886.6. The Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 0.6% to 42,140.4. Among sectors, technology paced the gainers, with a 2.3% jump, while health care saw the biggest drop of 3%.

In economic news, US consumer prices rebounded last month, but missed Wall Street's estimates, while annual inflation eased to the lowest level since February 2021, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said.

"There isn't a lot of evidence of tariffs boosting the (consumer price index) in April, but this shouldn't be surprising as it takes time," Oxford Economics said. "The areas where tariffs likely boosted prices in April were in furniture/bedding, appliances, and to a lesser extent toys."

The US and China recently reached an agreement on a 90-day suspension of reciprocal duties. The two countries had been in a trade war since President Donald Trump's announcement of sweeping new tariffs early last month.

The official US producer prices report for April is scheduled to be released Thursday.

Small business optimism in the US deteriorated for a fourth consecutive month in April as owners continue to grapple with macro uncertainty, a survey by the National Federation of Independent Business showed Tuesday.

Uncertainty remained "a major impediment" for owners in April, impacting hiring plans, investment decisions and other aspects of business, NFIB Chief Economist Bill Dunkelberg said.

US Treasury yields were mixed, with the 10-year rate edging higher by 0.9 basis point to 4.48% and the two-year rate easing 1.6 basis points to 4.02%.

Nvidia, Amazon , Alphabet's Google and Advanced Micro Devices announced separate partnerships with Humain, an artificial intelligence company backed by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

Nvidia shares were up 5.6%, the top gainer on the Dow and among the best on the S&P 500. AMD gained 4%. Amazon was up 1.3%, while Alphabet's class C and A shares gained 0.8% and 0.7%, respectively.

The announcements come as the White House said Tuesday that Saudi Arabia will invest $600 billion in the US, initially focusing on areas including energy, defense, technology and critical minerals. Trump arrived in Riyadh on Tuesday, with plans to visit Qatar and the United Arab Emirates later in the week.

First Solar shares surged 23%, the top performer on the S&P 500, as Wolfe Research upgraded the stock to outperform from peer perform.

UnitedHealth Group suspended its full-year outlook amid higher-than-expected medical costs, while the health insurance giant said that Andrew Witty stepped down as chief executive due to "personal reasons." The company's shares slumped 18%, the worst performer on the Dow and the S&P 500.

Coinbase Global shares soared 24%. The stock's upcoming inclusion in the S&P 500 is expected to help boost institutional ownership in the cryptocurrency exchange, Oppenheimer said.

West Texas Intermediate crude oil was up 2.7% at $63.65 a barrel.

Gold rose 0.8% to $3,253.90 per troy ounce, while silver added 1.5% to $33.12 per ounce.

Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Oil & Gas and Consumer Goods sectors led shares higher while losses in the Healthcare, Telecoms and Basic Materials sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.64%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.72%, and the NASDAQ Composite index gained 1.61%.

The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA), which rose 5.59% or 6.87 points to trade at 129.87 at the close. Meanwhile, Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT) added 2.92% or 9.99 points to end at 352.54 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) was up 2.46% or 4.89 points to 203.42 in late trade.

The worst performers of the session were Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH), which fell 17.79% or 67.37 points to trade at 311.38 at the close. Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK) declined 4.71% or 3.79 points to end at 76.64 and Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) was down 3.70% or 5.70 points to 148.44.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which rose 22.63% to 191.56, Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which was up 15.99% to settle at 38.88 and Palantir Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:PLTR) which gained 8.10% to close at 128.05.

The worst performers were Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) which was down 17.79% to 311.38 in late trade, Elevance Health Inc (NYSE:ELV) which lost 9.91% to settle at 375.40 and Humana Inc (NYSE:HUM) which was down 9.53% to 228.75 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cardio Diagnostics Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:CDIO) which rose 3,301.14% to 5.35, TNL Mediagene (NASDAQ:TNMG) which was up 122.63% to settle at 0.72 and TEN Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:XHLD) which gained 112.29% to close at 1.38.

The worst performers were Polyrizon Ltd (NASDAQ:PLRZ) which was down 91.86% to 0.03 in late trade, Affimed NV (NASDAQ:AFMD) which lost 80.66% to settle at 0.13 and Hepion Pharmaceuticals Inc (OTC:HEPA) which was down 57.55% to 0.14 at the close.

Rising stocks outnumbered declining ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1670 to 1111 and 64 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1797 rose and 1517 declined, while 124 ended unchanged.

Shares in Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) fell to 3-years lows; down 17.79% or 67.37 to 311.38. Shares in Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) rose to 52-week highs; gaining 2.46% or 4.89 to 203.42. Shares in Polyrizon Ltd (NASDAQ:PLRZ) fell to all time lows; losing 91.86% or 0.32 to 0.03. Shares in Affimed NV (NASDAQ:AFMD) fell to all time lows; down 80.66% or 0.56 to 0.13. Gold Futures for June delivery was up 0.95% or 30.69 to $3,258.69 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in June rose 2.76% or 1.71 to hit $63.66 a barrel, while the July Brent oil contract rose 2.45% or 1.59 to trade at $66.55 a barrel.

EUR/USD was up 0.95% to 1.12, while USD/JPY fell 0.67% to 147.45.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.83% at 100.75.
