The NZX 50 fell 54 points, or 0.4%, to 13,353 in early trade on Monday, snapping two consecutive sessions of gains as weak cues from Wall Street Friday weighed on sentiment amid broad rotation out of U.S. tech stocks into value names.
Meanwhile, local data showed New Zealand’s services activity dropped the most in six months during November, with the index staying below its long-term average.
Caution also grew ahead of November food inflation, after the October print emerged from a 5-month low in September.
However, losses were partly limited by supportive signals from China, New Zealand’s largest trading partner, after policymakers last week pledged to maintain a proactive fiscal stance in 2026 and reiterated confidence in the economy’s long-term growth fundamentals.
Sector-wise, industrial services, non-energy minerals, and financials led the declines, with Fletcher Building Ltd. (-1.9%), T&G Global Ltd. (-1.7%), Sanford Ltd. (-1.7%), and A2 Milk Co. (-1.6%) among the top laggards.
