Japan's GDP contracted at an annualized pace of 2% in the three months through March. It was forecast to be a contraction of 1.5% and the previous month was a 0.4% expansion.

Real private consumption, which accounts for more than half of Japan's GDP, fell by 0.7%, while nominal spending increased by 0.2%. Real household consumption expenditure rose by 0.7% and nominal expenditure rose by 0.2%. The real household consumption spending excluding imputed rent decreased by 0.8% and its nominal spending increased by 0.2%.

Real domestic demand contributed a decrease of 0.2% to GDP and net exports of goods and services contributed a decline of 0.3%.

Japan's GDP contracted in the first quarter as consumers and businesses reduced spending, highlighting the fragility of the recovery. Private consumption and capital spending both fell, while net exports also dragged.
