IndiGo shares jump 4% to emerge as top Nifty gainer after MoU for codeshare partnership with China Southern Airlines

The shares of IndiGo-parent InterGlobe Aviation jumped around 4 percent on November 11 after the company announced that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish codeshare partnership and mutual co-operation agreement with China Southern Airlines.
The Indian airline said that its customers will be able to connect on the China Southern Airlines' extensive network beyond Guangzhou as part of this agreement. This is however subject to regulatory approvals.
IndiGo said that this partnership aims to offer improved travel options and integrated travel itineraries to customers traveling between India and China on the joint network of both airlines.
What IndiGo CEO says:
"We are happy to join hands with China Southern Airlines as we enhance connectivity between India and China. We recently reinstated our direct daily flights connecting Kolkata with Guangzhou followed by inaugurating a new direct service between Delhi and Guangzhou. Now with this partnership, our joint customers will get the added convenience of booking seamlessly for travel across various parts of India and China on the joint network of IndiGo and China Southern Airline," said IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers.
What China Southern Airlines CEO says:
China Southern Airlines President and CEO Han Wensheng meanwhile said, "China Southern Airlines highly values the development potential of the Indian market. Through cooperation with IndiGo, we will be able to further leverage each other’s advantages, offer a wider range of travel products, and give new momentum to the economic, cultural and aviation exchanges between the two countries."
The latest announcement from IndiGo comes a day after the airline started direct daily flights from Delhi to Guangzhou. During the earnings call held on November 4, IndiGo's management highlighted that it has already spearheaded the resumption of flights to China which are operating from Kolkata to Guangzhou since October 26. "We are super proud to be starting Delhi to Guangzhou in a few days as from November 10 onwards. With this very important step, we are looking at adding more direct flights to China," said Elbers.
Direct flights were operational between India and China till early 2020 before being suspended due to the coronavirus pandemic. Indian and Chinese carriers had direct services. The services remained suspended in view of the eastern Ladakh border row which ensued later.
