Oil futures post back-to-back gains with support from yesterday's bigger-than-expected U.S. crude inventory draw, and lack of visible progress toward direct negotiations to end the Russia-Ukraine war. "Some geopolitical risk premium is slowly being pumped back into the market while a smaller than expected crude supply is adding to bullish sentiment," Ritterbusch says in a note. "We feel that this lift in crude prices has been accentuated appreciably by a lack of fresh speculative selling, with most of the funds heavily allocated to the short side of crude futures." WTI settles up 1.3% at $63.52 a barrel as October moves to the front of the curve. Brent rises 1.2% to $67.67 a barrel. (anthony.harrup@wsj.com)

Livestock futures decline slightly, with cattle receding from a historic high and hogs still in a soft spot. Cattle prices are benefiting from tight supply linked to screwworm disease in Mexico, an important source of U.S. imports. Hogs have been recovering this month, but markets are weighed down by the lack of a trade agreement with China, a key destination of U.S. production, according to Global Commodity Analytics' Mike Zuzolo. On the CBOT, live cattle close at $2.3473 a pound, just a little lower than yesterday's all-time high. Lean hogs also fall slightly, to 89.925 cents. (paulo.trevisani@wsj.com; @ptrevisani)

Corn fields surveyed in northern Iowa by the Pro Farmer Crop Tour produced some of the biggest yields seen in stops on the tour all week. Even so, tip back damage and disease was still evident — meaning that the final numbers from the eastern leg of the tour will likely show a smaller yield than projected by the USDA in its August WASDE report. Scouts on the western leg of the tour through southern Minnesota reported improved yield figures from last year. The Pro Farmer Crop Tour concludes today, with Pro Farmer announcing its Corn Belt-wide forecast on Friday. (kirk.maltais@wsj.com)
