Live cattle futures started September swinging toward the downside, but that negative momentum looks to have passed. The most-active contract closedup 2% to $2.34675 a pound, making it the third session out of the past four that live cattle futures have finished higher - this after finishing lower for seven out of the previous eight sessions. "Weaker markets here in September shouldn't be all that uncommon, but is definitely a different mood than we'd experienced through most of the summer," says StoneX in a note. Lean hog futures close up 0.5% to 97.775 cents a pound. (kirk.maltais@wsj.com)

Casual Dining's Relative Strength Could Be Partly Political — Market Talk

Casual dining's relative strength in the restaurant industry in recent months may be at least partially due to differences in sentiment among consumers based on their political persuasions, Morgan Stanley analysts say in a research note. Among all casual diners the analysts cover, on average, about 68% of their locations are in states that voted for Donald Trump in 2024, compared with about 63% for fast-food companies and 44% for fast-casual and coffee chains, which is the weakest of the three segments right now, they say. "To the extent there is a political spread in consumer sentiment (which most data has shown) or behavior, this is a rough way to play that," the analysts say. They acknowledge that they aren't able to prove causation and there is a lot more nuance behind what is going on. "But it could be added to the list of possible drivers," the analysts say. ICE Review: Canola Lower on Harvest, Exports, Outside Markets

WINNIPEG, Manitoba--Intercontinental Exchange canola futures pulled back because of the advancing Prairie harvest, lackluster exports and pressure from outside markets.

Alberta reported on Friday that its canola harvest was 13% complete. Rain has been forecast for southern Manitoba over the next few days, while most of Alberta and Saskatchewan are to remain dry, aiding their harvests.

Five weeks into 2025-26, canola exports of nearly 530,000 metric tons are less than half of those a year ago, the Canadian Grain Commission said.

"Without China, we're definitely fading behind really fast," an analyst said.

Also, the analyst suggested 2024-25 canola ending stocks of 1.60 million tons calculated by Statistics Canada may have been underestimated.

StatCan is scheduled to update its crop production estimates on Wednesday.

Last month, the department projected the 2025-26 canola harvest at 19.94 million tons.

The November canola contract was unable to remain above its 20-day moving average.

Losses in Chicago soybeans and soymeal on Monday, along with those in European rapeseed weighed on canola values. Small increases in soyoil weren't enough to stem the declines.

However, the vegetable oils received support from upticks in crude oil.

The Canadian dollar swung higher at 72.61 U.S. cents compared to Friday's close of 72.21.

There were 38,770 contracts traded on Monday, compared to 48,562 on Friday. Spreading accounted for 23,720 contracts traded.

U.S. natural gas futures gain ground with hotter near-term temperature outlooks adding demand. "Forecasts point to above-normal temperatures persisting through the next two weeks," Andy Huenefeld of Pinebrook Energy Advisors says in a note. The late-season heat should lift cooling demand and trim storage injections, although "September heat waves are not near as impactful as peak-summer events, so the overall impact on the fundamental picture is likely to be muted," he adds. Nymex natural gas settles up 3.5% at $3.043/mmBtu as the front month continues to waver around the $3 level.(anthony.harrup@wsj.com)
