Investing.com – U.S. stocks were lower after the close on Thursday, as losses in the Consumer Services, Utilities and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average declined 0.34%, while the S&P 500 index lost 0.40%, and the NASDAQ Composite index lost 0.34%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Merck & Company Inc (NYSE:MRK), which rose 1.68% or 1.42 points to trade at 86.08 at the close. Meanwhile, Chevron Corp (NYSE:CVX) added 1.52% or 2.33 points to end at 155.55 and Unitedhealth Group (NYSE:UNH) was up 1.17% or 3.51 points to 303.35 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which fell 4.49% or 4.61 points to trade at 97.96 at the close. International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM) declined 1.30% or 3.15 points to end at 239.40 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was down 1.01% or 4.04 points to 397.70.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Paramount Skydance Corp (NASDAQ:PSKY) which rose 14.66% to 16.03, Packaging Corp of America (NYSE:PKG) which was up 6.17% to settle at 210.35 and Hewlett Packard Enterprise Co (NYSE:HPE) which gained 3.71% to close at 21.82.
The worst performers were First Solar Inc (NASDAQ:FSLR) which was down 7.00% to 191.98 in late trade, Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT) which lost 4.49% to settle at 97.96 and PG&E Corp (NYSE:PCG) which was down 4.49% to 14.67 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Aptorum Group Ltd Class A (NASDAQ:APM) which rose 237.80% to 4.29, Aethlon Medical Inc (NASDAQ:AEMD) which was up 97.30% to settle at 2.19 and Protagenic Therapeutics (NASDAQ:PTIX) which gained 86.84% to close at 4.26.
The worst performers were ModivCare Inc (NASDAQ:MODV) which was down 69.73% to 0.56 in late trade, Star Fashion Culture Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:STFS) which lost 54.05% to settle at 0.20 and Greenwave Technology Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:GWAV) which was down 45.56% to 0.09 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1511 to 1230 and 99 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1714 rose and 1592 declined, while 169 ended unchanged.
Shares in Paramount Skydance Corp (NASDAQ:PSKY) rose to 52-week highs; rising 14.66% or 2.05 to 16.03. Shares in Aptorum Group Ltd Class A (NASDAQ:APM) rose to 52-week highs; rising 237.80% or 3.02 to 4.29. Shares in ModivCare Inc (NASDAQ:MODV) fell to all time lows; falling 69.73% or 1.29 to 0.56. Shares in Star Fashion Culture Holdings Ltd (NASDAQ:STFS) fell to all time lows; falling 54.05% or 0.24 to 0.20. Shares in Greenwave Technology Solutions Inc (NASDAQ:GWAV) fell to all time lows; down 45.56% or 0.08 to 0.09.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 5.86% to 16.61.
Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.16% or 5.33 to $3,383.17 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in October rose 1.21% or 0.76 to hit $63.47 a barrel, while the October Brent oil contract rose 1.11% or 0.74 to trade at $67.58 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.38% to 1.16, while USD/JPY rose 0.69% to 148.35.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.46% at 98.54.
