Investing.com – U.S. stocks were mixed after the close on Monday, as gains in the Financials, Oil & Gas and Utilities sectors led shares higher while losses in the Technology, Consumer Services and Consumer Goods sectors led shares lower.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 1.00%, while the S&P 500 index added 0.55%, and the NASDAQ Composite index declined 0.14%.
The best performers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Walmart Inc (NYSE:WMT), which rose 3.14% or 2.67 points to trade at 87.82 at the close. Meanwhile, Sherwin-Williams Co (NYSE:SHW) added 2.78% or 9.44 points to end at 349.19 and Home Depot Inc (NYSE:HD) was up 2.33% or 8.34 points to 366.49 in late trade.
The worst performers of the session were Boeing Co (NYSE:BA), which fell 1.59% or 2.76 points to trade at 170.55 at the close. Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) declined 1.28% or 2.46 points to end at 190.26 and NVIDIA Corporation (NASDAQ:NVDA) was down 1.18% or 1.29 points to 108.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Discover Financial Services (NYSE:DFS) which rose 7.67% to 170.90, Live Nation Entertainment Inc (NYSE:LYV) which was up 4.44% to settle at 130.58 and Fox Corp Class B (NASDAQ:FOX) which gained 4.33% to close at 52.71.
The worst performers were Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) which was down 8.93% to 28.34 in late trade, Lululemon Athletica Inc (NASDAQ:LULU) which lost 3.43% to settle at 283.01 and Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc (NYSE:ARE) which was down 3.23% to 92.51 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Vision Marine Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:VMAR) which rose 990.73% to 5.24, Utime Ltd (NASDAQ:WTO) which was up 949.14% to settle at 1.58 and iCoreConnect Inc (NASDAQ:ICCT) which gained 671.93% to close at 2.20.
The worst performers were Damon Inc (NASDAQ:DMN) which was down 59.77% to 0.01 in late trade, Marblegate Acquisition Corp (NASDAQ:GATE) which lost 50.98% to settle at 19.61 and Vaxcyte Inc (NASDAQ:PCVX) which was down 45.64% to 37.76 at the close.
Falling stocks outnumbered advancing ones on the New York Stock Exchange by 1400 to 1380 and 78 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2241 fell and 1073 advanced, while 131 ended unchanged.
Shares in Moderna Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) fell to 5-year lows; falling 8.93% or 2.78 to 28.34. Shares in Alexandria Real Estate Equities Inc (NYSE:ARE) fell to 52-week lows; falling 3.23% or 3.09 to 92.51. Shares in Damon Inc (NASDAQ:DMN) fell to all time lows; down 59.77% or 0.02 to 0.01. Shares in Vaxcyte Inc (NASDAQ:PCVX) fell to 52-week lows; losing 45.64% or 31.70 to 37.76.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was up 2.91% to 22.28.
Gold Futures for June delivery was up 1.38% or 43.10 to $3,157.40 a troy ounce. Elsewhere in commodities trading, Crude oil for delivery in May rose 3.01% or 2.09 to hit $71.45 a barrel, while the June Brent oil contract rose 2.69% or 1.96 to trade at $74.72 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.12% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.10% to 149.97.
The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.15% at 103.86.
