Rare-earth stocks are the hot trade on Wall Street. Investors are closely watching how the U.S. is trying to move away from a reliance on China for the minerals that are key components in everything from electric vehicles, military equipment, and chips.

President Donald Trump and Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese on Monday signed a critical minerals agreement designed to unlock more capital for the sector.

Albanese, speaking alongside Trump from the White House, said the deal included an $8.5 billion project pipeline.

The White House subsequently published a fact sheet saying the two countries would invest more than $3 billion in critical mineral projects over the next six months, with recoverable resources in the projects estimated to be worth $53 billion.

The deal, which the White House refers to as a framework, comes after China earlier this month tightened export controls on rare earths, prompting Trump to hit back with threats of even higher tariffs. The president has warned that a 100% levy on imports from the world's second largest economy will come into effect on Nov. 1, unless China backs down.

Members of the Trump administration have repeatedly expressed concerns over Beijing's "chokehold" on the critical minerals supply, and increased investment in the sector is likely to lead to more mining and processing capacity outside China.

Shares of rare earth and critical minerals producers have surged over the past week amid increasing U.S.-China tensions as well as speculation about how the government's industrial policy might benefit companies.

Shares of MP Materials, the largest producer of rare earths in the Western Hemisphere, dropped 0.9% to $82.13 in premarket trading Tuesday. The stock is boasting a 431% gain so far this year, helped by a deal with the Defense Department to ensure future mineral supply.

USA Rare Earth, Ramaco Resources, and Energy Fuels are among other names that have benefited from recent developments. The shares were all down marginally early Tuesday.

Investing.com -- Nuclear and uranium shares have advanced in premarket trading on Wednesday as investors bet on the sector benefiting from rising trade tensions between the U.S. and China.

According to analysts at B. Riley, U.S. national security priorities could continue to drive gains in nuclear-related equities.

“On the nuclear fuel front, the administration has made it clear that it wants to strengthen the supply chain, likely benefiting our uranium mining companies (UUUU, EU, URG) and Centrus (LEU), which seeks to restore domestic enrichment capabilities,” the analysts wrote in a note to clients.

The U.S. has been increasing efforts to secure key energy and technology supply chains amid heightened geopolitical competition with Beijing.

Analysts believe nuclear power and uranium mining companies are likely to see fresh momentum as Washington looks to reduce reliance on foreign fuel sources.

In early trading, Centrus Energy gained 7.8%, Lightbridge climbed 7.1%, and NuScale Power rose 6.3%. Oklo added 5.9%, while Nano Nuclear Energy advanced 5.2%.

Uranium miner enCore Energy has moved sharply higher, jumping 9.8% after announcing the discovery of new uranium mineralized roll fronts at its Alta Mesa In-Situ Recovery uranium project.

Critical-mineral companies extended recent gains after China hit back at the U.S. over trade.

Critical Metals climbed 27% in premarket trading on Tuesday after closing up 55% on Monday. United States Antimony gained 14%, Energy Fuels rose 11% and USA Rare Earth was up 9%. MP Materials edged up 3.7%.

Beijing moved to effectively ban Chinese companies from doing business with U.S. subsidiaries of a South Korean shipbuilding giant.

China said the Hanwha Ocean subsidiaries supported the U.S. government and hurt Chinese firms' interests.

The move reignited trade tensions after comments from Trump over the weekend briefly eased fears of a revived trade war with China. "Don't worry about China, it will all be fine! Highly respected President Xi just had a bad moment," Trump said Sunday on his Truth Social platform.

Trump had threatened 100% tariffs on Friday after Beijing moved to impose restrictions on the export of rare-earth minerals.
