Wheat futures rose toward $5.50 a bushel, as traders reacted to tightening global supply signals.
The rally was driven by a second straight week of rising Russian export prices, fueled by concerns over a slower harvest and reduced output in southern Russia.
As the world’s top wheat exporter, Russia plays a key role in shaping global wheat markets, including futures traded on the Chicago Board of Trade.
The country recently lowered its 2025 harvest forecast to 88–90 million tons and cut its 2025/26 export projection to 43–44 million tons, down from 45 million.
These developments sparked renewed supply concerns, lifting prices on both sides of the Atlantic.
Futures rose on the CBOT as well as Europe’s Euronext exchange, reflecting the market’s sensitivity to Russian production outlooks.

U.S. natural gas futures add to yesterday's losses with focus on weather and cooler temperature forecasts for August, while LNG feedgas flows remain choppy. Slightly lower production estimates were seen limiting the decline, while prices further out the curve were more buoyant. "The January contract is essentially already testing support, sitting at its lowest level since late spring," Gary Cunningham of Tradition Energy says in a note. "That could be a buying signal for some physical buyers hedging winter exposure such as utilities or larger retail suppliers." The Nymex front month settles down 2.2% at $3.252/mmBtu. (anthony.harrup@wsj.com)
Live cattle futures drop 0.3%% to $2.215 a pound, backing away from record-highs set earlier this month. Consumer demand patterns still look to support higher beef prices throughout the rest of the year, says Lance Zimmerman of Rabobank in a note. U.S. consumers are on pace to consume 60 pounds of beef per person, the highest since 2009, Zimmerman says. Tariff threats don't appear to be derailing this demand, nor is record-high prices, he adds. Lean hogs finish down 0.6% to 90.675 cents a pound. (Kirk.maltais@wsj.com)
Oil futures fall for a third consecutive session with the market turning its focus to the deadline for U.S. tariffs to go into effect and the next OPEC+ meeting to decide on production levels for September. "The August 1 tariff deadline looms large on the horizon as a possible demand destruction event," Mizuho's Robert Yawger says in a note. Meanwhile, OPEC+ needs to add 281,000 barrels a day in September to complete the unwinding of 2.2 million b/d, but "there is speculation the OPEC 8 will add even more barrels. There is zero speculation they will add less," he adds. August WTI goes off the board at $66.21 a barrel, down 1.5%, and the September contract falls 1% to $65.31. Brent settles down 0.9% at $68.59.
