Data Interpretation: The Philadelphia Fed manufacturing index is one of the regional manufacturing indexes released earlier each month. It provides a snapshot of current manufacturing activity in the Mid-Atlantic region and predicts the state of manufacturing in the U.S. as a whole, so it is widely watched by the market. When the index is above zero, it indicates manufacturing-sector growth, and when below zero, it indicates contraction. Participants indicate the direction of change in overall business activity and the various measures of activity at their plants: employment, working hours, new and unfilled orders, shipments, inventories, delivery times, prices paid, and prices received.
