USD/JPY Retreats From Two-Week High as BoJ Signals Further Tightening

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

USD/JPY retreats toward 158.00 after hawkish BoJ comments strengthen the Yen. However, Dollar resilience and Brent’s return above $100 are limiting the downside.

The Japanese Yen regained some ground against the US Dollar on Wednesday, pushing USD/JPY back toward 158.00 after the pair earlier climbed to a two-week high around 158.51. The move followed unexpectedly hawkish remarks from Bank of Japan board member Ayano Sato, although broader conditions continue to restrict the Yen’s recovery.
Sato, generally regarded as one of the more dovish voices at the BoJ and one of two policymakers who opposed September’s rate increase, signaled that she is becoming more receptive to additional tightening. She backed a gradual adjustment of monetary policy and argued that higher borrowing costs could contribute to sustainable economic growth.
The comments strengthened expectations that the BoJ’s tightening cycle may have further to run, providing an immediate lift to the Yen. However, the reaction has remained relatively contained, with USD/JPY holding close to recent highs rather than experiencing a more substantial reversal.
One factor limiting Yen demand is the continued resilience of the US Dollar. Traders remain reluctant to aggressively reduce Dollar exposure ahead of the release of the Federal Reserve’s latest monetary policy meeting minutes, which could provide further clues about the timing and scale of additional US rate increases.
At the same time, renewed strength in energy markets is creating another obstacle for the Japanese currency. Brent crude has recovered almost $4 from Tuesday’s lows and moved back above $100 per barrel. Fresh attacks by Iran-backed Houthis on Saudi Arabia, combined with concerns surrounding a storm approaching the US, have revived fears of supply disruptions despite improving crude flows through the Strait of Hormuz.
As a major energy importer, Japan remains particularly exposed to sustained increases in Oil prices. That dynamic could continue to counteract support generated by expectations of tighter BoJ policy.
For USD/JPY, the immediate picture therefore remains finely balanced. BoJ tightening expectations are providing the Yen with support, but a firm US Dollar and renewed Oil-price pressure are preventing a decisive bearish shift in the pair.

Technical AnalysisUSD/JPY Retreats From Two-Week High as BoJ Signals Further Tightening_1

USD/JPY is beginning to show signs of exhaustion on the 4-hour chart after its recovery stalled beneath a well-established resistance band around 158.35–158.55. Price is currently trading near 158.28, with several recent attempts to push through this area failing to generate a sustained breakout. The repeated rejection is increasingly important because the same region has acted as a major turning point before.
The broader recovery from the September low around 153.00 remains visible, but momentum has flattened considerably near the top of the range. Instead of extending the sequence of higher highs, USD/JPY has moved sideways beneath resistance, suggesting buyers are struggling to absorb the selling pressure concentrated around 158.50.
The immediate focus is therefore shifting toward the 156.35–156.55 support zone. A decisive move away from 158.50 and below the recent consolidation would expose this area first. The chart suggests an initial decline into 156.50 could be followed by a temporary rebound as buyers attempt to defend support.
That recovery, however, may simply provide another opportunity for sellers if price remains capped beneath 158.35–158.55. A subsequent break below 156.35 would significantly weaken the structure and expose the next major support around 154.80–155.00.
Below there, the larger bearish objective sits around 153.00–153.30, which represents the base of the previous recovery and a major demand area on the chart. The projected structure therefore favors a rejection → decline → corrective rebound → continuation lower sequence rather than an immediate straight-line selloff.
A sustained H4 breakout above 158.55–158.90 would challenge this bearish setup and indicate that buyers have regained control. Until that happens, the inability to clear resistance keeps the risk tilted toward a deeper retracement.
          TRADE RECOMMENDATION
          SELL USD/JPY
          ENTRY PRICE: 158.30
          STOP LOSS: 159.00
          TAKE PROFIT: 153.30
