USD/JPY Holds Firm as Intervention Risk Keeps Bulls Cautious

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

USD/JPY is regaining ground as the impact of last week’s coordinated US-Japan intervention begins to fade. However, renewed warnings from Japanese and US officials could limit aggressive upside bets.

The Japanese Yen (JPY) has struggled against the US Dollar this week as traders increasingly test whether last week’s coordinated intervention by Washington and Tokyo will be followed by further action. USD/JPY has consequently regained some ground, although the continuing threat of intervention is keeping bullish conviction relatively contained.
Japan’s Ministry of Finance confirmed that the United States and Japan jointly entered the foreign exchange market last week to counter what officials described as “excessive volatility and disorderly movements” in the Yen.
The operation initially triggered a sharp Yen recovery, but the lack of immediate follow-up intervention has allowed USD/JPY buyers to gradually return.
The key question now is whether traders believe the intervention represented a one-off move or the beginning of a more sustained effort to prevent excessive Yen depreciation.
The Yen’s ability to retain its intervention-driven gains will depend heavily on whether markets remain convinced that coordinated action involving Japanese and US authorities remains available.
That message has been reinforced by officials on both sides.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has indicated that Washington could be prepared to act again if necessary, while Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said Japan “won't hesitate to carry out more forex intervention with the US.”
This creates a difficult environment for USD/JPY traders. The broader fundamental backdrop may still favor Dollar strength against the Yen, but intervention risk makes aggressively chasing the pair higher increasingly dangerous.
The absence of fresh action could encourage USD/JPY to continue recovering as traders rebuild Yen-short positions. However, the higher the pair climbs, particularly if the move becomes rapid or disorderly, the greater the possibility that Japanese and US authorities step back into the market.
The Bank of Japan (BoJ) outlook will also remain important. Intervention can temporarily slow Yen depreciation, but a sustainable reversal in USD/JPY would likely require stronger support from Japanese monetary policy and a narrowing of the US-Japan interest-rate differential.

          Technical Analysis

USD/JPY Holds Firm as Intervention Risk Keeps Bulls Cautious_1
USD/JPY is showing signs of rebuilding its bullish structure following the sharp intervention-driven selloff. On the 1-hour chart, the pair has recovered strongly from the 155.90–156.00 region and is now consolidating around 158.40 after breaking above the previous resistance zone near 158.15–158.30. The sequence of higher lows since the August 3 bottom suggests that buyers are gradually regaining control, although the current sideways movement indicates some hesitation before the next directional move.
The 158.15–158.30 region is now the key near-term support zone. As long as USD/JPY remains above this area, the technical bias favors another push higher. A decisive break above the recent consolidation around 158.50–158.60 could open the door toward 159.00, followed by 159.60 and the psychological 160.00 level. Beyond there, the major resistance area around 160.70–160.85 represents the primary bullish target and coincides with the zone from which the previous intervention-driven decline accelerated.
On the downside, a sustained move back below 158.15 would weaken the immediate bullish setup and could expose 157.60 before the more significant support around 157.00. A break beneath 157.00 would represent a more meaningful deterioration in the recovery structure and could bring the 155.90–156.00 demand zone back into focus.
Overall, USD/JPY remains technically constructive while holding above 158.15. The current consolidation resembles a potential continuation phase, with a successful defense of support favoring a renewed advance toward 159.00 and eventually 160.70–160.85. However, given the heightened US-Japan intervention risk, any move toward the 160.00–161.00 region could face considerably stronger volatility and selling pressure.
          TRADE RECOMMENDATION
          BUY USD/JPY
          ENTRY PRICE: 158.30
          TAKE PROFIT: 163.00
          STOP LOSS: 157.00
