USD/CHF Holds Gains as Markets Brace for Crucial US PCE Inflation

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

USD/CHF holds modest gains near 0.8930, but stronger Swiss sentiment has helped the Franc recover from its session lows. Attention now shifts decisively toward US PCE inflation, where the outcome could reshape expectations for the Fed and determine the pair's next move.

USD/CHF is holding a modest advance on Wednesday, although the Dollar has struggled to extend the move as improving Swiss economic sentiment gives the Franc some underlying support. The pair remains around the 0.8930 region after briefly pushing closer to 0.8940 earlier in the session.
The latest Swiss data offered a more encouraging signal on the domestic outlook. The ZEW Economic Expectations Index climbed to 12.1 in August from 10.0 in July, marking a second consecutive monthly improvement and its strongest reading since November. The recovery in sentiment has helped the Franc claw back part of its earlier weakness, even if the immediate market reaction has remained relatively contained.
For USD/CHF, however, Switzerland's data is unlikely to be the main driver for long. The bigger test comes from the United States, where investors are waiting for the latest PCE inflation report for clearer direction on Federal Reserve policy.
Core PCE inflation is expected to remain elevated, with the annual reading seen around 3.3%. A stronger-than-anticipated report would reinforce the argument that US inflation remains too persistent for the Fed to comfortably step away from further tightening. That scenario could push Treasury yields higher and give the Dollar fresh momentum against the Franc.
The opposite outcome could prove more significant. Recent markets have become increasingly sensitive to evidence that US price pressures are cooling, meaning a softer PCE reading could further reduce expectations for another rate increase and leave the Dollar vulnerable.
There is also a changing geopolitical element influencing the currency market. Oil has retreated sharply from last week's highs as diplomatic efforts involving Iran and Oman revive hopes that restrictions around the Strait of Hormuz could eventually ease. The improvement in sentiment reduces some of the immediate demand for defensive Dollar positioning while simultaneously easing concerns that another surge in energy costs will feed directly into US inflation.
USD/CHF remains caught between two competing forces. The Dollar still has support from the possibility that persistent inflation keeps the Fed hawkish, but the Franc is beginning to find a firmer domestic foundation as Swiss sentiment improves. The PCE release should therefore determine whether the Dollar can turn Wednesday's modest advance into a broader recovery or whether sellers regain control.

Technical AnalysisUSD/CHF Holds Gains as Markets Brace for Crucial US PCE Inflation_1

USD/CHF is attempting to build a recovery after the sharp selloff that drove the pair into the 0.7970 support region. On the 4-hour chart, buyers have responded strongly from this floor, producing a sequence of higher short-term lows and pushing price back above the 0.8020–0.8030 zone. The rebound has now brought the pair toward 0.8040, an area that previously acted as support and is beginning to emerge as the first meaningful test for the recovery.
The broader structure, however, has not fully shifted in favour of buyers. USD/CHF remains below the 0.8130–0.8140 resistance zone, which has repeatedly rejected upside attempts since June. A sustained break above this region would represent a much more significant change in market structure and could open the door toward 0.8200–0.8210, where the July highs and the next major supply zone are located.
In the near term, the 0.8020 area is particularly important. Holding above this region would suggest that the recent breakdown has been absorbed and that buyers are establishing a stronger base for another leg higher. A brief pullback into this zone followed by renewed buying pressure would strengthen the bullish recovery scenario and keep 0.8135 as the primary upside objective.
Conversely, failure to maintain the recovery above 0.8020 would leave USD/CHF vulnerable to renewed selling pressure. A decisive move back below this area could expose 0.8000, followed by the major 0.7970 support zone. A sustained breakdown beneath 0.7970 would invalidate the immediate bullish recovery structure and signal that the broader bearish move is resuming.
For now, price action suggests the aggressive decline has lost momentum and that USD/CHF is moving through a recovery phase rather than extending the previous selloff. As long as the 0.8020–0.8030 region continues to attract buyers, the technical picture favours a gradual push toward 0.8135, with a confirmed breakout there potentially extending the advance toward the 0.8200 area.
