USD/CHF Approaches 17-Month Highs as Fed-SNB Policy Gap Widens

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

USD/CHF approaches 17-month highs near 0.8380 as the SNB signals no immediate rate hikes while the Fed remains positioned for further tightening. Elevated US yields support the Dollar, although financial stability concerns could eventually favor the Franc.

The US Dollar continues to strengthen against the Swiss Franc on Thursday, extending USD/CHF's winning streak to four consecutive sessions as contrasting monetary policy expectations reinforce demand for the Greenback. The pair advanced toward 0.8350, approaching its 17-month high around 0.8380, with investors increasingly focused on the widening interest rate differential between the Swiss National Bank (SNB) and the Federal Reserve (Fed).
The latest advance followed remarks from SNB Vice Chairman Antoine Martin, who acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Switzerland's economic outlook amid the ongoing conflict involving Iran but offered little indication that policymakers were preparing to tighten monetary conditions.
Martin maintained that Swiss inflation remains comfortably within the central bank's price stability range of 0%–2%, suggesting that higher borrowing costs are unnecessary for the time being. His comments reinforced expectations that the SNB will maintain its accommodative stance despite mounting geopolitical and energy-related risks.
Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve appears to be following a considerably different policy trajectory. Although the minutes from September's Federal Open Market Committee meeting supported expectations of unchanged interest rates in October, policymakers continued to express concern about persistent inflation pressures.
Markets consequently anticipate additional US monetary tightening, with expectations pointing toward at least 50 basis points of rate increases over the coming six months. A further hike in December remains a central consideration for investors.
Rising energy prices have strengthened the argument for maintaining restrictive US monetary policy. Renewed concerns about supply disruptions linked to the Middle East conflict have pushed Oil prices higher, increasing inflation risks and contributing to elevated Treasury yields. These developments have helped preserve the Dollar's interest rate advantage over the Swiss Franc.
However, the Dollar's advance is not without risks. MUFG analyst Lloyd Chan cautioned that a continued rise in longer-dated Treasury yields could eventually shift investor attention toward tightening US financial conditions and the possibility of growing concern among policymakers about bond-market stability.
Under such circumstances, Switzerland's comparatively strong fiscal position could restore some of the Franc's defensive appeal, potentially limiting further gains in USD/CHF.
The near-term outlook remains favorable for USD/CHF as long as the Fed maintains its tightening bias while the SNB sees little justification for raising rates. A sustained move above 0.8380 could reinforce bullish momentum, although any deterioration in US financial conditions may encourage investors to reassess the Dollar's recent strength.

Technical AnalysisUSD/CHF Approaches 17-Month Highs as Fed-SNB Policy Gap Widens_1

USD/CHF continues to build a constructive bullish structure on the hourly chart, with the pair trading around 0.8336 as buyers attempt to extend the recovery that followed the sharp rejection from the 0.8260 support region. The recent price action reflects a gradual shift in momentum, characterized by improving higher lows and renewed buying interest around previously established support levels.
The recovery has been particularly significant around the 0.8318–0.8322 demand zone, which has repeatedly attracted buyers and helped stabilize the pair following its earlier decline. More importantly, the ascending trendline extending from the October lows continues to provide dynamic support, reinforcing the developing bullish structure. As long as prices remain above this trendline, temporary pullbacks are likely to be viewed as corrective movements rather than indications of a broader bearish reversal.
Attention now turns to the immediate resistance area around 0.8335–0.8340, where the pair is attempting to establish a sustained foothold. A convincing hourly close above this region would strengthen bullish momentum and expose the next significant resistance zone between 0.8365 and 0.8370. This area previously triggered a sharp rejection, making it an important technical barrier for buyers to overcome.
Should USD/CHF successfully clear 0.8370, the bullish outlook would gain further credibility, potentially encouraging an advance toward 0.8400 before extending into the 0.8440–0.8450 region, consistent with the projected upward trajectory on the chart.
Nevertheless, a brief consolidation or corrective retreat toward 0.8320 remains possible before another attempt higher. A sustained break beneath this support would weaken the immediate bullish setup and expose the stronger demand region around 0.8260–0.8265, where the latest recovery originated.
Overall, the technical outlook favors continued appreciation, supported by the ascending trendline, improving market structure and repeated defense of nearby support. The broader bullish scenario remains intact while USD/CHF holds above 0.8318, with a confirmed breakout above 0.8370 potentially opening the door to a more substantial advance toward 0.8450.
