NZD/USD Falls as US-Iran Tensions Support Greenback

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

NZD/USD fell toward 0.5650 as US-Iran tensions supported the Dollar. Rising expectations of an October RBNZ hike are helping limit Kiwi losses.

NZD/USD remained under pressure on Tuesday, falling around 0.25% to 0.5650 and hovering near its lowest level since late June. Continued tensions between the United States and Iran are supporting demand for the US Dollar, although growing expectations of another Reserve Bank of New Zealand rate hike are helping cushion the Kiwi's decline.
Geopolitical uncertainty remains a major driver after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met Qatari mediators to discuss proposals that could be presented to Washington. Tehran continues to insist that reopening the Strait of Hormuz depends on conditions established by Iran's Supreme Leader.
The discussions follow US President Donald Trump's rejection on Sunday of an Iranian proposal that would have reopened the Strait. With Washington and Tehran still divided, demand for the Greenback remains supported, creating further pressure on NZD/USD.
However, New Zealand's monetary policy outlook is becoming increasingly supportive for the Kiwi. Markets now assign roughly an 80% probability of a 25-basis-point RBNZ hike to 3.00% on October 28, compared with around one-third immediately following September's rate increase.
Those expectations strengthened after RBNZ Governor Anna Breman warned that elevated Crude Oil prices could push near-term inflation above the central bank's forecasts. Stronger-than-expected second-quarter economic growth has added to the case for further tightening.
Attention will therefore turn to New Zealand CPI on October 21, one week before the RBNZ decision. In the US, PCE inflation, ISM Manufacturing PMI and Nonfarm Payrolls will be key for the Dollar later this week.
NZD/USD remains vulnerable while geopolitical uncertainty keeps the Dollar supported. However, increasingly aggressive RBNZ expectations could limit the downside, particularly if New Zealand inflation remains persistent.

Technical AnalysisNZD/USD Falls as US-Iran Tensions Support Greenback_1

NZD/USD continues to trade with a decisively bearish bias on the 4-hour timeframe, with the broader decline remaining contained beneath a descending trendline. Successive lower highs reinforce the view that sellers continue to control price action, while attempts to establish a meaningful recovery have repeatedly lost momentum.
The pair is now pressing against the 0.5645–0.5655 support region, an area that has repeatedly prevented deeper losses over recent sessions. However, the continued testing of this floor, combined with weak rebounds, suggests that buying interest is gradually being absorbed. A convincing break beneath 0.5645 would therefore represent an important bearish continuation signal.
Such a move would bring 0.5625 into focus before exposing the more significant 0.5590–0.5600 region, which remains the primary downside objective indicated by the current market structure.
Any recovery is likely to encounter initial selling pressure around 0.5695–0.5700, where horizontal resistance converges with the broader descending structure. Only a sustained break above this area would begin to challenge the bearish outlook and potentially shift attention toward 0.5740–0.5750.
For now, the repeated failure to generate higher highs, combined with pressure building against support, keeps the path of least resistance tilted lower. A clean breakdown from the current base could provide the trigger for the next leg toward 0.5600.
          TRADE RECOMMENDATION
          SELL NZD/USD
          ENTRY PRICE: 0.5640
          STOP LOSS: 0.5700
          TAKE PROFIT: 0.5590
