Japan and the United States confirmed that they had carried out their first coordinated intervention in 15 years—buying the yen and selling the dollar—to stem the yen’s decline to a 40-year low, and made it clear that they would not hesitate to take further coordinated action should excessive volatility reoccur in the foreign exchange market. Japan’s Ministry of Finance stated that this joint intervention was intended to address the excessive and disorderly fluctuations of the yen in recent months, reflecting both sides’ shared stance on maintaining exchange rate stability and preventing sustained sell-offs of the yen and Japanese government bonds that could trigger spillover risks in global financial markets. U.S. President Trump said that the U.S. assisting Japan in stabilizing the yen not only demonstrates the alliance between the two countries but also contributes to global economic stability.
U.S. labor market data may provide new clues regarding the Federal Reserve’s interest rate trajectory. The CME Group’s FedWatch tool indicates that the market still expects a 65% probability of a rate hike by the Federal Reserve in September. Previously, the Federal Reserve kept interest rates unchanged at its July policy meeting, but there were significant differences of opinion among policymakers.
Technical Analysis
On the daily chart, the USD/JPY pair shows Bollinger Bands widening downward, with moving averages diverging downward, indicating that the downtrend remains intact. However, the candlestick pattern formed a “golden needle bottom,” suggesting the possibility of a rebound cannot be ruled out. The RSI stands at 27, indicating that market participants are predominantly selling. On the four-hour chart, the Bollinger Bands are widening downward, moving averages are diverging downward, and the MACD fast and slow lines are trading below the zero line, suggesting that the bearish trend remains intact. With the RSI at 36, the market has entered oversold territory and is likely to rebound toward the 12-period EMA. Strategically, look to buy on dips.
