GBP/JPY Slips as US-Japan Intervention Fears Support Yen

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

GBP/JPY remains under pressure near 209.45 as renewed fears of coordinated US-Japan intervention support the Yen. Japanese officials have reinforced concerns over excessive currency weakness and volatility.

The British Pound recovered part of its earlier decline against the Japanese Yen on Friday, but GBP/JPY remained under pressure near 209.45, down around 0.17% on the session. Renewed demand for the Yen has emerged as traders reassess the possibility of coordinated intervention by Japanese and US authorities.
The latest shift in sentiment followed comments from Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama, who said US President Donald Trump had expressed concern about the Yen's weakness during talks with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in New York earlier this week.
Katayama also indicated that the principles established during the previous coordinated intervention remain relevant, drawing attention back to the July 31 operation, when Tokyo and Washington acted jointly to counter excessive volatility and disorderly currency movements.
Those remarks have increased sensitivity around Yen crosses. The Japanese currency had struggled following the Bank of Japan's latest monetary policy announcement, but the renewed prospect of official action has encouraged traders to reduce bearish Yen exposure.
For GBP/JPY, intervention concerns are therefore becoming an increasingly important near-term driver. Even without immediate action from authorities, the possibility of coordinated measures could make traders more cautious about aggressively selling the Yen, particularly if currency volatility increases further.
The Pound has managed to recover from its session lows, limiting the decline in GBP/JPY, but the cross remains vulnerable while intervention speculation continues to support the Japanese currency.

Technical AnalysisGBP/JPY Slips as US-Japan Intervention Fears Support Yen_1

GBP/JPY’s daily structure has deteriorated considerably after the pair broke beneath the long-term ascending trendline that had supported the broader advance for several months. The breakdown represents an important shift in market structure, with the recovery from the recent selloff now struggling to regain former support.
Price is trading around 209.15, directly beneath the 209.80–210.50 resistance zone. This area previously acted as support but is now being tested from below, making it a critical barrier for any meaningful recovery. The recent rebound toward this region has already shown signs of hesitation, suggesting sellers remain active on rallies.
The sequence of price action also favors the downside. GBP/JPY has fallen sharply from the 215.50–216.30 region, formed a lower low around 207.50, and subsequently recovered only to retest resistance near 210.00. Failure to reclaim this area would strengthen the case that the current bounce is corrective rather than the beginning of a sustained reversal.
A renewed move below 208.00–207.50 would expose the next downside area around 205.00–206.00. Beyond there, the chart points toward a substantially deeper decline, with the 198.00–199.00 region emerging as the primary longer-term bearish target.
For buyers to regain control, GBP/JPY would need to recover above 210.50 and eventually reclaim the broken ascending trendline. Until that happens, rebounds remain vulnerable to renewed selling pressure. Higher resistance is visible around 215.50–216.30, followed by the major 219.00–220.00 supply zone.
Overall, the break of the long-standing bullish trendline combined with the failure to recover former support keeps the technical structure bearish, with the present rebound offering the possibility of another downside leg.
          TRADE RECOMMENDATION
          SELL GBP/JPY
          ENTRY PRICE: 209.00
          STOP LOSS: 211.00
          TAKE PROFIT: 198.50
