GBP/JPY Falls as UK Budget Uncertainty Meets Yen Strength

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

GBP/JPY retreats toward 209.70 as Sterling faces uncertainty ahead of the UK Budget and the Yen strengthens before the BoJ decision. Fiscal headroom, elevated Gilt yields and expectations of a December Japanese rate hike remain key drivers.

GBP/JPY fell 0.17% to around 209.70 on Wednesday as the Pound weakened ahead of the UK Autumn Forecast Statement, while the Yen drew support from expectations surrounding the Bank of Japan’s policy decision. With fiscal credibility under scrutiny in Britain and investors increasingly pricing in further Japanese tightening, the cross faces competing pressures from both sides.
The main focus is Chancellor John Healey’s first Budget, with markets watching how much fiscal headroom the government can preserve amid elevated borrowing costs. ABN AMRO expects a relatively measured package, with Healey likely to balance targeted tax increases against limited cost-of-living support. The bank sees scope for fiscal headroom of around £18–24 billion, while a figure below £14 billion could trigger a negative reaction in the bond market. A result close to £24 billion, by contrast, could reassure investors.
There may be room for a more positive outcome if the Office for Budget Responsibility adopts a stronger wage-growth assumption. UK 10-year Gilt yields have retreated from earlier gains but remain up 0.18% near 5.35%, highlighting the sensitivity of borrowing costs to the government’s fiscal plans. A credible Budget could help limit pressure on Sterling, whereas insufficient fiscal headroom could add a UK-specific risk premium.
Attention will then turn to the Bank of England’s decision next week, with markets widely anticipating a 25-basis-point rate increase to 4%. For now, however, the Yen is outperforming ahead of Friday’s Bank of Japan announcement. Analysts at Brown Brothers Harriman expect the BoJ to hold its policy rate at 1.25% as officials assess September’s increase, but markets are already pricing in roughly 75% odds of another 25-basis-point hike in December and nearly 75 basis points of tightening over the next year.
That shift in expectations could continue to support the Yen even if the BoJ remains cautious this week. For GBP/JPY, the immediate direction will depend on whether the UK Budget reassures bond investors or revives fiscal concerns, alongside any signals from the BoJ about the timing of its next move.

Technical AnalysisGBP/JPY Falls as UK Budget Uncertainty Meets Yen Strength_1

GBP/JPY is showing signs of bearish momentum on the H4 chart after reversing sharply from the recent high around 211.80–212.00. The pair has fallen back below the 210.20–210.50 resistance zone and is currently trading near 209.74. The latest price action shows repeated difficulty sustaining rebounds, suggesting that sellers are gaining control after the previous upward move. Although price is attempting to stabilize around 209.70, the recovery remains fragile while the pair trades beneath the broken resistance area.
The immediate resistance zone sits around 210.20–210.50. A rebound into this region followed by another rejection would strengthen the bearish case and could open the way toward 209.20 and then 208.50. The chart's projected path points to a deeper decline toward the 207.50–207.80 support zone, which previously attracted buying interest. This area is the key downside target if selling pressure continues.
The bearish setup would weaken if GBP/JPY reclaims 210.50 and establishes sustained H4 closes above that level. Such a move could trigger a recovery toward 211.20 and the recent highs. For now, however, the failure to hold above resistance favors a downside continuation scenario. A retest and rejection near 210.20–210.50 would provide stronger confirmation than entering solely on the current price.

          TRADE RECOMMENDATION

          SELL GBP/JPY
          ENTRY PRICE: 209.70
