GBP/JPY Corrects Toward 216.50 but Uptrend Remains Intact

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

GBP/JPY is undergoing a correction from 217.00 toward 216.50 after its recent rally. Strong UK PMIs are cushioning Sterling, while hotter Japanese inflation provides only limited support to the Yen.

The British Pound enters a corrective phase against the Japanese Yen on Friday, with GBP/JPY retreating toward 216.50 after its latest advance stalled around the 217.00 area. The pullback follows a strong run higher and suggests some profit-taking is emerging, although encouraging UK business activity data is helping limit the downside.
Preliminary UK S&P Global PMI figures offered Sterling some support. The Services PMI improved to 52.8 from 52.1, comfortably exceeding expectations of 51.8, while the Composite PMI edged higher to 52.5. Manufacturing activity softened slightly to 51.5, broadly matching forecasts.
The stronger activity figures helped offset weaker UK consumer data. Retail Sales contracted 0.5% in July, while annual growth slowed to 1.6% from 3.8%, highlighting continued pressure on household spending.
Meanwhile, Japanese inflation accelerated, providing some fundamental support for expectations of another Bank of Japan rate hike in September. Headline CPI increased to 1.9% YoY from 1.6%, while core inflation rose to 1.8%.
However, the Yen has struggled to capitalize meaningfully on the figures. Investors remain cautious about how aggressively the BoJ can tighten policy after recent GDP data showed that Japan's economic growth lost momentum during the second quarter.
The retreat from 217.00 looks more like a correction following the recent GBP/JPY rally than a confirmed change in direction. Sterling continues to receive support from resilient UK activity, while uncertainty surrounding the BoJ's tightening capacity remains a constraint on sustained Yen appreciation. The immediate question is whether buyers return around 216.50 or whether profit-taking develops into a deeper retracement.

Technical AnalysisGBP/JPY Corrects Toward 216.50 but Uptrend Remains Intact_1

GBP/JPY remains technically bullish on the 4-hour chart, with the recovery from the late-July lows continuing to produce a clear sequence of higher highs and higher lows. The pair is now trading around 216.70 after briefly testing the 217.00 area, where some profit-taking has emerged.
The latest pullback looks more like a healthy correction within the broader uptrend rather than the beginning of a bearish reversal. Buyers are currently defending the 216.10–216.30 region, which previously acted as resistance and is now developing into an important near-term support zone. Holding above this area keeps the bullish structure firmly intact.
A renewed push above 217.00 would put bulls back in control and expose the major 218.70–218.90 resistance zone. This remains the key technical barrier on the chart following repeated reactions around the area in July. A convincing breakout above 218.90 could trigger another acceleration toward 220.00, with the broader bullish projection pointing toward the 222.00–222.70 region.
On the downside, a break below 216.00 could trigger a deeper correction toward 214.60–214.80, where buyers previously stepped in aggressively. As long as this region remains intact, I would continue to view weakness as corrective and favor buying dips. Only a sustained breakdown below 214.60 would begin to weaken the current bullish structure and expose the 212.70–212.90 support area.
Overall, GBP/JPY continues to favor the upside despite the rejection around 217.00. The current correction could provide the market with room to reset before another attempt higher, with 218.80 representing the next major objective and 220.00–222.00 becoming increasingly relevant if that resistance gives way.

          TRADE RECOMMENDATION

          BUY GBP/JPY
          ENTRY PRICE: 216.60
          STOP LOSS: 214.00
          TAKE PROFIT: 220.00
