EUR/JPY Holds Steady as Markets Await Next Catalyst From ECB and BoJ

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

EUR/JPY trades around 185.85 as ECB June hike expectations support the Euro while BoJ normalization signals and fresh Japanese intervention warnings keep the Yen defended.

EUR/JPY at 185.85 is not indecision. It is the logical result of two central banks simultaneously signalling hawkishness in a cross where those signals cancel each other out with almost mathematical precision. The ECB is hiking in June. The BoJ is tightening further. Japan's Finance Minister is warning about intervention. The result is a pair that is going nowhere and doing it with a certain elegant symmetry.
The June ECB hike is no longer a possibility. It is a near certainty. A Reuters poll of economists projects the deposit rate rising to 2.25% at the June meeting with a further increase in September. That forward-priced tightening cycle would ordinarily drive meaningful currency appreciation. What is preventing it from doing so is a Eurozone economy that keeps reminding markets the ECB is hiking into weakness rather than strength.
Thursday's retail sales data made that point bluntly. Eurozone retail sales fell 0.4% month on month in April, worse than the 0.3% decline expected and a sharp reversal from March's 0.8% gain. Annual growth slowed to 1.0% from 2.1%. Wednesday's PMI revisions were higher but both Services and Composite remain in contraction. The picture is of a central bank tightening because it has no choice on inflation, not because the economy can comfortably absorb the pressure. BNY analysts have flagged exactly this concern, noting that a more hawkish ECB does not automatically translate into sustained Euro gains, and the data is backing them up.
On the Japanese side, BoJ Governor Ueda confirmed Wednesday that the central bank's basic stance remains to continue raising rates in line with economic and inflation developments. Finance Minister Katayama reiterated that authorities stand ready to intervene if necessary. The market has not forgotten April 30. When Japanese officials use that language at these levels, the risk of a sharp Yen reversal is real and it is priced into EUR/JPY's reluctance to sustain any move above 186.00 to 186.50.
Three things could break this stalemate. A more aggressive ECB signal than the two-hike consensus would push the cross higher. A faster BoJ normalization path than currently priced would push it lower. A Middle East resolution that reduces energy inflation pressure on both economies simultaneously would scramble everything. None of those is happening imminently.
My view is that 184.50 to 185.00 is the more natural gravitational center for this cross right now. Moves toward 186.50 look like selling opportunities. The Yen has a government standing behind it at these levels and the Euro has a weakening consumer working against it. That combination does not produce breakouts. It produces ranges.

Technical AnalysisEUR/JPY Holds Steady as Markets Await Next Catalyst From ECB and BoJ_1

After weeks of choppy, directionless price action between the 184.40 and 186.00 horizontal boundaries, EUR/JPY has quietly assembled a technical structure that deserves considerably more attention than the surface-level rangebound behavior suggests. Price trades at 186.001 at time of writing, and the confluence of a rising trendline, a horizontal support conversion, and a clean break above the 185.80 to 186.00 resistance band has created a setup that points meaningfully higher into next week.
The ascending trendline drawn from the early May lows near 183.60 is the structural backbone of what has developed over the past month. It has been tested on multiple occasions, most recently during the late May and early June corrective episodes that pushed price back toward the 185.20 to 185.40 area, and each test produced a reliable bullish response that kept the ascending structure entirely intact. That trendline is now converging with the 185.80 horizontal support level, creating a confluence zone that has become the chart's most important near-term floor. A 2-hour close below 185.80 would be the first genuine warning that the structure is under pressure.
The horizontal framework of this chart tells a story of progressive breakout attempts. The 185.20 to 185.40 band held price as a ceiling throughout late May before being broken to the upside and converting to support. The 185.80 to 186.00 zone, which had capped multiple rallies across the past two weeks, was pierced in Thursday's session with a close that now needs to be sustained to confirm the breakout. These sequential resistance conversions are the hallmark of a market building toward a more significant directional move rather than simply oscillating within a defined range.
The projected path on the chart identifies the 187.20 to 187.50 major resistance band as the primary upside target, a level that aligns with the early May highs before the sharp intervention-driven correction. Getting there requires a clean and sustained hold above 186.00, which the current candle is attempting to establish, followed by a break through the dotted reference near 186.20 to 186.40 that represents the next intermediate hurdle. A 2-hour close above 186.40 would accelerate the projected move and likely attract momentum buyers who have been waiting for confirmation of the range resolution.
The 184.40 support band at the base of the chart is the level that separates the current constructive structure from a scenario requiring a complete reassessment. Price has not threatened that level since early May and the ascending trendline provides a rising defense well above it, making a test of 184.40 a low-probability outcome unless fundamentals shift dramatically.
          TRADE RECOMMENDATION

          ENTRY PRICE: 186.00
