EUR/GBP Rises as Lower Oil Prices Ease Pressure on the Euro

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

EUR/GBP rebounds toward 0.8400 as stronger German business sentiment, lower oil prices and easing French yields support the Euro. However, expectations of a BoE rate hike next week could limit the pair’s upside.

The Euro strengthened against the Pound on Monday, with EUR/GBP recovering toward 0.8400 after touching year-to-date lows near 0.8360 on Friday. Better-than-expected German business sentiment, falling oil prices and easing French bond yields have supported the single currency, although expectations of a Bank of England (BoE) rate hike next week could limit further gains.
Germany’s IFO Business Climate index rose to 90.2 in October from 89.9 in September, beating expectations for a decline to 89.8 and reaching its strongest reading in more than three years. While the assessment of current conditions weakened to 88.8 from 89.5, the expectations component improved to 91.6 from 90.4. This suggests businesses are becoming more optimistic about the outlook despite continued weakness in present economic conditions.
The Euro has also benefited from a pullback in oil prices. Brent crude fell below $110 a barrel on Monday, down around 2% from Friday’s highs, amid reports that Qatari mediators had arrived in Tehran to pursue efforts to ease tensions between the United States and Iran. The prospect of reduced geopolitical tensions has helped ease pressure from elevated energy prices, offering some support to the Euro.
French bond markets have provided another positive signal. Moody’s maintained France’s credit rating at Aa3 despite rising public debt and widespread social unrest. The decision was welcomed by investors who had anticipated a downgrade, helping push French 10-year government bond yields below 5% before they surrendered part of their decline during Monday’s European session.
Attention now turns to monetary policy decisions from the European Central Bank and other major central banks this week. The BoE’s decision follows next week, with markets anticipating a quarter-point rate increase. That expectation could support Sterling on pullbacks and restrict EUR/GBP’s recovery, even as improving German sentiment and easing pressure in French bond markets offer the Euro some near-term relief.

Technical AnalysisEUR/GBP Rises as Lower Oil Prices Ease Pressure on the Euro_1

EUR/GBP is showing signs of a potential bullish rebound after an extended bearish move from the 0.8600 region. Price has recently dropped sharply into the 0.8380–0.8400 support zone, where buyers have started to respond. The latest candle is recovering toward 0.8395, suggesting that demand may be emerging near this key area. However, the broader structure remains bearish, so the current move should be treated as a possible corrective rebound rather than a confirmed trend reversal.
The projected price path on the chart suggests an initial bounce from support, followed by a short pullback before another upward leg. The first important resistance sits around 0.8515–0.8530, where price previously consolidated before breaking lower. If bullish momentum strengthens and EUR/GBP reclaims this zone, the recovery could extend toward the 0.8600–0.8610 resistance area, which previously acted as support. A sustained move above that level would provide stronger evidence that the bearish structure is weakening.
The key level to defend is the current 0.8380–0.8400 demand zone. A successful hold could support a short-term recovery, particularly if price begins forming higher lows on the daily chart. However, a decisive daily close below 0.8380 would undermine the bullish scenario and expose lower support levels. Given the sharp preceding decline, confirmation of buying pressure is important before assuming the rebound will develop into a larger reversal.
