DXY Strengthens as US Bond Yields Surge and Euro Weakens

          Warren Takunda

          Traders' Opinions

          Summary:

The US Dollar remains supported as 10-year Treasury yields reach 5.35%, their highest since 2002. Rising Oil prices, widening US-German yield spreads and French fiscal concerns continue to strengthen Dollar demand.

The US Dollar continues to benefit from surging Treasury yields and growing uncertainty across global financial markets, with renewed geopolitical tensions pushing energy prices higher and increasing concerns over persistent inflation.
The benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield climbed to 5.35% on Wednesday, its highest level since April 2002, while the 30-year yield also reached a 24-year high. The latest surge reflects mounting pressure in government bond markets as investors demand greater compensation for holding longer-term debt amid rising inflation risks.
Energy markets have emerged as a major driver of the bond selloff. Brent crude has returned above $100 per barrel following intensified Iranian attacks on commercial tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, raising fresh concerns about disruptions to global Oil supplies.
Higher energy costs threaten to keep inflation elevated, potentially complicating the Federal Reserve's efforts to restore price stability. With investors demanding higher yields to compensate for these risks, US borrowing costs have continued climbing, reinforcing the Dollar's appeal.
Additional pressure on Treasuries has come from government debt issuance. Investors reduced their exposure ahead of Wednesday's $39 billion auction of new 10-year notes, while Thursday's scheduled 30-year bond sale and Treasury buyback operations remain in focus.
Across the Atlantic, growing unease surrounding France's fiscal position has encouraged investors to shift away from French government securities toward German Bunds, traditionally regarded as one of Europe's safer sovereign assets.
This flight toward German debt has helped contain the country's benchmark 10-year yield near 3.5%, widening the relative attraction of US government bonds.
With US 10-year Treasuries offering more than 180 basis points in additional yield compared with their German counterparts, international investors have an added incentive to seek Dollar-denominated assets, although currency hedging costs can reduce that advantage.
Meanwhile, the Euro's continued weakness has played a significant role in lifting the US Dollar Index. The single currency accounts for approximately 58% of the DXY basket, and its depreciation has contributed roughly three-quarters of the index's recent advance.
The combination of widening yield differentials, European fiscal uncertainty and renewed inflation concerns continues to favor the Greenback. However, the sustainability of the rally will depend on whether Treasury yields remain elevated and whether geopolitical developments keep energy prices under pressure.
The Dollar's underlying momentum remains constructive as long as US yields retain their advantage over European borrowing costs. Nevertheless, persistently rising yields could eventually create broader financial-market instability, making the relationship between bond-market volatility and Dollar demand increasingly important.

Technical AnalysisDXY Strengthens as US Bond Yields Surge and Euro Weakens_1

The US Dollar Index (DXY) continues to demonstrate strong bullish momentum on the 4-hour chart, with price action maintaining a consistent sequence of higher highs and higher lows following its recovery from the 98.50 region. The sustained advance has pushed the index toward the 102.00–102.25 resistance zone, where buyers are attempting to establish a fresh breakout and extend the broader upward trend.
The recent rally has been supported by a series of successful breakouts and retests of previously established resistance levels, reinforcing the strength of the underlying bullish structure. Notably, the index has managed to hold above the 101.40–101.60 region, which previously acted as resistance but has since developed into an important support area. This shift in market structure suggests that buyers remain firmly in control, with corrective pullbacks continuing to attract renewed demand.
Currently trading around 102.17, the index is challenging a significant resistance barrier between 102.00 and 102.25. A decisive 4-hour close above this region would strengthen the case for another bullish extension, potentially opening the way toward 102.50, followed by the 103.00 psychological threshold. Beyond these levels, the projected bullish structure points toward 103.80–104.00, where the next substantial upside objective is located.
Although the prevailing momentum remains positive, a temporary retracement toward 102.00 cannot be ruled out as the market consolidates its recent gains. Such a move would remain consistent with the bullish outlook, provided buyers successfully defend the breakout region. A deeper correction could bring the 101.40–101.60 support zone back into focus, while a sustained break beneath this area would weaken the immediate bullish setup and expose the next support around 100.10–100.30.
Overall, the technical picture continues to favor further Dollar appreciation. The combination of higher lows, successful resistance-to-support transitions and persistent buying pressure suggests that the current consolidation may represent a continuation pattern rather than an approaching reversal. As long as DXY remains above 101.40, the broader bullish structure remains intact, with a confirmed breakout above 102.25 potentially accelerating the advance toward 104.00.
