Data released on Monday showed that New Zealand’s services sector slipped deeper into contraction in November, further confirming signs of ongoing weakness in domestic demand. The BusinessNZ Performance of Services Index fell from 48.4 to 46.9, the lowest level since May and well below the survey’s long-term average of 52.8. All five sub-indices remained in contraction territory, underscoring the broad-based nature of the slowdown.

Market Watch. November’s data “completely shattered” any hopes of an imminent expansion in the sector. Although the proportion of negative comments declined slightly compared with recent months, businesses continued to cite a weak economic environment, subdued consumer confidence, high living costs, inflation, interest rates, and reduced spending as the main constraints on activity.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) delivered dovish signals at its previous policy meeting, and markets expect scope for further easing over the coming quarters. Compared with the European Central Bank, New Zealand’s policy outlook appears more accommodative. This shift in interest rate differentials is placing medium-term pressure on the New Zealand dollar.

RBNZ’s Bloxham said in a media interview today that the bar for further near-term policy easing remains high. Although the projected path in the November Monetary Policy Statement leaves limited room for additional rate cuts, Bloxham emphasized that “if economic conditions evolve as expected, the Official Cash Rate (OCR) may remain at its current level of 2.25% for some time.”

Looking ahead to the next OCR decision in February, Bloxham noted that the central bank will continue to assess upcoming data, financial conditions, and global developments, with particular attention to their implications for New Zealand’s economic outlook and medium-term inflation target.

Bloxham also reiterated that monetary policy does not follow a preset path and stressed that the Monetary Policy Committee’s regular meeting schedule reflects this flexibility.

Technical Analysis

Despite a sharp pullback in recent sessions, EURNZD remains within a medium-term ascending channel on the daily chart. Price action continues to hold above key moving averages, indicating that the broader trend structure remains intact.

On the four-hour chart, the pair rebounded after finding solid support in the 2.0200–2.0250 zone, suggesting that buying interest remains firm at lower levels. Short-term moving averages have turned higher, and price has moved back above the moving-average cluster, signaling a recovery in bullish momentum.

The Relative Strength Index is holding above 50 and gradually trending higher, without entering overbought territory, leaving room for further upside. It should be noted, however, that the 2.0350–2.0400 area represents a prior high-volume zone and a previous swing high, where bulls may face profit-taking pressure.
