Chicago Fed President Austan Goolsbee recently observed that the ongoing friction between the United States and Iran is increasingly resembling a classic inflationary shock. While he noted that the situation has not yet transitioned into a "stagflationary" event—which would involve simultaneous damage to the labor market and a spike in inflation—he emphasized that such a scenario would force the Federal Reserve into a difficult position, requiring a prioritized defense of one side of its dual mandate over the other. Simultaneously, St. Louis Fed President Alberto Musalem adopted a more hawkish stance, asserting that the balance of risks for monetary policy has shifted decisively toward inflation control. Musalem suggested that there are several plausible economic scenarios that would necessitate holding interest rates steady for an extended period, adding that current policy remains neutral or even slightly accommodative when viewed in real terms.
This hawkish central bank commentary is backed by remarkably resilient domestic labor data. The latest ADP National Employment Report revealed that the U.S. private sector added 109,000 positions in April, marking the most substantial monthly gain in over a year and a quarter. This figure comfortably exceeded market forecasts and represented a significant acceleration from the revised March print of 61,000, suggesting that the labor market remains tight despite elevated borrowing costs.
In the geopolitical arena, a surge of optimism regarding a potential diplomatic resolution between Washington and Tehran has provided a significant tailwind for traditional safe-haven sentiment. Reports from Axios indicate that both nations are nearing a consensus on a 14-point memorandum, which includes a 30-day negotiation window aimed at reopening the vital Strait of Hormuz and implementing constraints on Tehran’s nuclear program. Following these developments, global energy markets reacted sharply; crude oil prices plummeted, with West Texas Intermediate (WTI) shedding over 7% as the geopolitical risk premium rapidly unwound.
Meanwhile, Swiss economic indicators continue to present a fragmented domestic outlook. April’s Consumer Price Index (CPI) recorded a 0.3% monthly expansion, surpassing the previous month’s figure but falling just short of the 0.4% consensus. On an annualized basis, inflation climbed to 0.6%, marking its highest trajectory since late 2024. Conversely, the manufacturing sector delivered a notable upside surprise as the SVME Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) surged to 54.5 in April. This suggests a robust industrial expansion for the second consecutive month, providing a counter-narrative to the otherwise moderate inflationary data.
The relatively benign core inflation environment grants the Swiss National Bank (SNB) significant leeway to navigate current energy price volatility without being forced into reactive policy shifts. Consequently, current market valuations pricing in a 25-basis-point hike to 0.25% by year-end appear increasingly overextended. The SNB is likely to prioritize a stable policy stance as it monitors a "fragile" economic environment, especially given that domestic price pressures remain largely contained within manageable thresholds.Critical Support Breach Could Pave the Way for Accelerated Downside_1

          Technical Analysis

From a technical perspective, USD/CHF has entered a decisive bearish corrective phase following a strong upward impulse that peaked at 0.8045 in late March. More recently, the pair encountered firm resistance near the 100-period Moving Average, currently positioned at 0.7883, which catalyzed a retreat toward the local support floor at 0.7784. Crucially, the pair has executed a decisive close beneath the 200-period Moving Average at 0.7819, suggesting that bearish pressure is intensifying. Should the 0.7784 support level fail to hold, it would likely open the door for a deeper bearish expansion toward the 0.7610 structural target.
Momentum oscillators further corroborate this downward bias. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) is currently tracking at the 36 level, remaining above the oversold extremes of 28 observed in mid-April. This indicates that sellers still possess significant "runway" to push the pair lower before reaching technical exhaustion. Simultaneously, the MACD is printing a bearish histogram that has begun to regain depth, signaling a renewal of downward momentum. With the signal lines already trending beneath the neutral threshold, the technical configuration adds considerable weight to the bearish outlook, suggesting that the path of least resistance remains to the downside.
