U.S. President Trump stated that his latest proposal for talks—made after he called off plans for a large-scale attack on Iran—represents Iran’s “last chance.” Trump said he expects negotiations to begin within the next day or two to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and create a path for Iran to address U.S. concerns about its nuclear program. Iran denied that it is negotiating with the U.S. but said that talks with Oman regarding allowing more ships to pass through this vital waterway are making progress. Although there is hope for a breakthrough in U.S.-Iran relations, uncertainty in the Middle East remains high. Any signs of escalating tensions between the U.S. and Iran could push up crude oil prices and prompt central banks to keep interest rates high for longer. It is worth noting that while gold is often used as a hedge against inflation, it does not generate interest itself and therefore becomes less attractive in a high-interest-rate environment.
At its July policy meeting last week, the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed) decided to keep interest rates unchanged within the target range of 3.50% to 3.75%. At the press conference, Fed Chair Kevin Wash pledged an unwavering commitment to lowering inflation. Traders are awaiting Friday’s U.S. jobs data for further clues on the direction of U.S. interest rates.
Technical Analysis
On the four-hour chart, the Bollinger Bands are beginning to narrow, moving averages are flattening, and the MACD fast and slow lines are oscillating near the 0 axis. The RSI stands at 51, indicating strong market caution. On the daily chart, the Bollinger Bands are narrowing, moving averages are flattening, and a trend reversal could occur at any time. The RSI stands at 47, with investors largely adopting a wait-and-see approach. However, gold is approaching the bottom range; strategically, one should look to buy on dips.
